
The Department of Sport and Social Sciences has a vacant PhD position with 25% teaching responsibilities in the field of sport marketing. There is the possibility to apply for one out of two alternative predefined PhD projects. One project will be focusing on sport marketing and the digital transformation in sport, and the second on sport marketing and sustainable development.
Sport marketing and the digital transformation.
Digital transformation is a global phenomenon that increasingly affects sport and sport marketing. It describes the radical, disruptive, and evolutionary process of change due to information technologies in economies, institutions, and societies. Relevant PhD projects can examine questions such as:

- overcoming resistance and strengthening acceptance of digital technologies
- the integration of digital technologies to facilitate value co-creation of actors in sport (e.g., sport organizations, fans, sport participants, sponsors)
- or the impact of digital transformation on networks and actor engagement in sport

Sport marketing and sustainable development
Sport is widely recognized as an essential enabler of sustainable development and contributor to the achievement and implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development goals. Relevant PhD projects can relate to both the economic, social and environmental dimension of sustainable development. Possible research focus areas could be:

- sport marketing as an enabler of sustainable development
- value co-creation of diverse actors in sport (e.g., sport organizations, fans, sport participants, sponsors) to achieve short-term and long-term contributions to sustainable development
- or the promotion of sustainable development through sport organizations, individuals (e.g., athlete activism) or groups (e.g., fan activism) to their sport participants, fanbase, partners, surrounding communities and countries

Projects may also take on other questions within the defined topical areas. Candidates are advised to inform in their applications about the topical area to which they apply. The successful candidate will develop the PhD project under the supervision of Associate Professor Chris Horbel.
Competence requirements and selection process
The candidates are expected to work in close collaboration with staff at the Department of Sport and Social Sciences at the NIH. Additionally, the successful candidate will be involved in teaching at the Bachelor and Master levels within the Department of Sport and Social Sciences at NIH.
Applicants must be qualified for a PhD candidate position at NIH and must have completed Masterโs degree in sport marketing or sport management or a related field with relevance for the announced position (minimum grade requirement B or international equivalent). We search for motivated and open-minded candidates with intellectual curiosity and with the ability to work independently as well as being part of a research team. Good communicative and social skills will be emphasized. Mastery of a Scandinavian language is not mandatory, but we expect the candidate to have basic language skills in Norwegian within the first two years of employment.
Working conditions
The position`s starting salary is paygrade 54, NOK 501ย 200, – per annum before tax. Position code is 1017. The position has a salary increase by 3 % each year.
The appointment will be made according to terms applying to civil servants. NIH is a member of the Norwegian State Pension Fund.
The PhD research fellowship period is 4 years, and it includes 25% teaching duties and student-supervision responsibilities. Working place is the Department of Sport and Social Sciences at the NIH.
