Since the turn of the century, the Department of Sport Sciences (IDV) has developed into one of the largest research centres for sports sciences in Sweden and is internationally renowned. The environment is interdisciplinary with emphasis on social sciences and humanities. One of our overriding ambitions is to create research which has social relevance. Our point of departure is that sport must be understood and analysed in relation to surrounding society, but also that the importance of sport is such that it must inevitably have a corresponding impact on society itself.
The department has sizable collaboration with the surrounding society, through, for instance, Malmö idrottsakademi (Malmö Sports Academy), a centre for sustainable elite sport. We run research and collaborative projects with, among others, Mistra Sport and Outdoor and Malmö Youth Sport Study. We have a large research base and form part of several doctoral schools, including the newly founded Hållbar daglig rörelse i förskolor och skolor [Sustainable daily locomotion in pre-schools and schools].
The Department of Sport Sciences also has close collaboration with schools in the region under the student placement scheme (VFU) within the teacher training programme and student collaboration in the sports science programme with the broad sports science labour market.
According to the standard working hours agreement, professors conduct research 30 per cent of their time; for this position an extra 20 per cent financing is being offered via direct government funding for research, for the first four years.
Our department has a strong seminar-based culture. As an important meeting point for our interdisciplinary research environment, we have a research seminar which meets every week. For our doctoral students, there is a specific doctoral seminar which holds meetings every month. Within sport sciences, there is a research group with a specific interest in pedagogical and didactic issues connected to sport, physical activity and health. Our research on sports pedagogy also has a clear link to courses within the teacher training programme, and we work actively to strengthen the link between our education programmes and research.
