GIH is the only university in Sweden with the topic of sports, physical activity and health as a research field. We are now advertising a PhD student in sports science with the following topic:
- Para-cycling classification research
Description of the research field
GIH is offering a four-year partly Union Cycliste International (UCI)-funded PhD studentship on evidence-based classification of para-cycling. Challenging the interests in parasports is the threat of one-sided and predictable competition, in which the least impaired athlete always wins. To prevent this, para-athletes are placed in categories for competition based on their impairment, these are called sport classes. Based on guidelines from The International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the para-cycling classification system determines which athletes are eligible to compete in a sport and how athletes are grouped together for competition. There is a need to develop a para-cycling classification system through multi-disciplinary scientific research.
Within the PhD project several research questions regarding classification of para-cyclists (e.g. influence of impaired muscle power or coordination impairments on performance, relation of technical assessment with para-cycling performance) will be answered. Based on the results of this PhD project an advice report will be written to the UCI on how these results can be translated into evidence-based classification rules for para-cycling .The work will be performed in a consortium with the VU University in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, The Center of Human Movement Sciences of the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, and international classifiers.
Prerequisites for PhD studies
Prerequisites for acceptance into the PhD program in sport science are:
- That the applicant has an advanced level degree with at least 240 credits completed of which at least 60 credits must be from advanced level, or by other means attained a comparable education either in Sweden or internationally.
- That the applicant has the required additional capacities to succeed with PhD studies.
The applicant must have fulfilled the prerequisites before admission to doctoral studies.
Application
The application for acceptance into the program shall include the following attested documents:
- Examination certificate or other documents proving that the prerequisites are satisfied. If the prerequisites are not fulfilled at the time of application to doctoral studies, the applicant must enclose a certificate issued by the education provider stating the expected date of graduation,
- Advanced level thesis (magister or master thesis),
- Application form for: Ansökan till utbildning på forskarnivå,
- CV and a short motivation letter for the application with special attention given to aspects related to the project description,
- Suggestions for at least two references.
Enrollment and employment
The rules for employing PhD students are in the regulations SFS 1998:80. In order to be employed as PhD student one must have been enrolled in a PhD program. The level of likelihood of completion of the education is prioritised for employment.
Selection
A selection is made from the applicants based upon their capacity for successfully completing the PhD program. The criteria for assessing this capacity are: the applicant’s documented subject specific knowledge of biomechanics, in particular in regards to para-sport, skills in organization, planning and independently progressing with her/his work, capacity for analytical, problem solving and creative thinking, collaborative ability and also being able to express themselves well written and orally in Swedish and/or English. For this position experience in medical diagnostic assessment and performing tests on athletes or similar, and good communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary group are also important. Assessment of the applicant is based upon previous studies and results, quality of the research thesis, references, relevant experience, interviews and the applicant’s written motivation for the application.
Additional conditions
We assume you will be present at the university to complete courses and seminars and that you actively participate in our research environment. Apart from the requirement of working on your own education, the PhD student is also encouraged to use a part of the position in teaching, research and administrative work in accordance with specific rules in the ”Högskoleförordningen”. In order to prepare the PhD student for a continued career within academia, GIH encourages them to plan their PhD program over five years with 20% so-called institute service. The institute shall provide teaching experience and courses in the pedagogical development area can be accredited.

Time limited position for four years fulltime according to Högskoleförordningens 5 kap 1-7§ with employment starting according to individual agreement.
Salary
Salary is regulated according to a local settlement for a salary progression for PhD students.
