    About the position

    The professional field of the position as Associate Professor is Sports Science with a Social Sciences Profile. The research and teaching background of the person appointed to the position must be related to this research area, including academic perspectives from sports psychology, sports pedagogy, sports sociology, and other social science disciplines, and to the strategic focus areas of the Department.

    The Sports Science group at the department focus their research and teaching particularly on social and organizational aspects of sports participation, physical education, performance, and training. Applicants should have research and teaching experience in one or more of these focus areas. All these areas are equally important, and we are now looking for candidates who can complement each other and the current sports science staff’s research and teaching in the department.

    The Department of Sociology and Political Science (ISS) conducts research, teaching, and dissemination of knowledge in sociology, political science, sport science, and media studies. The Department has approximately 100 employees and 12 study programs. ISS is characterized by strong disciplines with emphasis on sociology and political science, contributing to interdisciplinary study programs and research at NTNU.     Your immediate supervisor is the Head of the Department. The position is full-time and permanent.

    Duties of the position

        • Responsibility for teaching and research in Sports Science with a Social Sciences Profile
        • Conduct teaching activities in accordance with the current study program and teaching plan. Supervision of bachelor, master and doctoral candidates in relevant fields
        • Carry out of exam work.
        • Work on further development of research, courses and teaching practice in Sports Science
        • Contribute to relevant continuing and further education programs at the Department.
        • Carry out research within professional field of the position and the candidate`s special research interests and participate in one or more of the Department`s research groups.
        • Responsibility for dissemination of research findings
        • Represent the field of study and the Department’s academic discipline in local, national and international interdisciplinary research collaboration
        • Take on the departments’s academic responsibility together with other academic staff.
        • Responsibility for administrative tasks and contribution to the development of discipline-specific strategic work.

    The person who is appointed must be able to teach Sports Psychology and Sports Science with a Social Sciences Profile, and subjects related to their own specialization at bachelor- and master levels, and, if necessary, also on general introductory subjects (such as social science methods or organization and management).

    The Associate Professor is obliged to conform with the regulations concerning changes and developments within the discipline and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at NTNU.

    Required qualifications

    You must have the following qualifications required for the position of Associate Professor:

        • a doctoral degree in Social Sciences (such as Psychology, Sports Science, Pedagogy, Sociology) and thematically related to Sports Science, or competence at an equivalent level documented either by scientific work or artistic work of the same scope and quality.
        • educational competence. You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the NTNUs guidelines for academic positions. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
        • After 3 years, it is a requirement that you achieve Norwegian language skills at level B2. If you do not master Norwegian when starting the position, it is a prerequisite that you within three years can demonstrate knowledge of Norwegian at a level equivalent to B2 in the course for non-native speakers held at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU. Language proficiency in Swedish or Danish is considered equivalent to Norwegian.
        • Good communication skills in written and spoken English.

    Preferred qualifications

        • Emphasis is placed on both recognized Scandinavian and English-language international publications. Attention will be given to the candidate’s willingness and potential for national and international research collaboration.
        • Special emphasis will be placed on the candidate’s future research and teaching potential, and whether this is in accordance with the strategic goals of the Department. Originality and quality in scientific publishing over the past five years, excluding parental leave, will be emphasized.
        • Applicants must document progression in research and publication, and present future research and publication plans. The candidate must be able to show the ability and willingness to contribute to the long-term development of research at the Department. Furthermore, we emphasize the applicant’s ability to tie their research plans and interests to the research (people and areas) where the Department has ongoing activities and development potential.
        • Flexibility, willingness, and ability to contribute broadly to research and teaching activities at the Department.
        • Experience from teaching in sports psychology
        • Experience as a project manager and with externally funded research is an advantage

    Personal qualities

        • personal qualities such as independence, problem-solving skills, willingness to collaborate, creativity, and motivation to contribute to a positive professional and social environment will be highly valued.

    Salary and conditions

    As an Associate Professor (code 1011) you are normally paid from gross 750 000 NOK per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

    The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

    After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

    For the necessary professional and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

        • A research plan
        • Details of projects for which you have served as project manager, including information on financing, duration, and scope
        • Names and contact information for three relevant referees

    It is important that you both document and reflect on your competence. You are encouraged to use the NTNUs competence matrix as a guide for documentation of your competence.

    Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.

    In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration, and an open scientific practice will be recognized.

    NTNU is obliged by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA and the obligations in the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment ( CoARA) on responsible assessment of research and recognition of a wider range of academic contributions to science and society. This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.
