Public defense of doctoral thesis | Uncovering the Field of Sports Coaches’ Talent Mindsets in Norway: Current States, Professional Developmental Potential, and Implications for Coaching Behavior by Dag André...

Based on knowledge of individuals' mindset and psychological interventions, Dag André Nilsen’s PhD-project aimed to enhance coach education programs and help coaches create training environments that promote learning and development. Specifically, the study examined whether and how a coach education program can help develop what is known as a growth mindset in coaches. A growth mindset is the belief that talent and skills can be developed through effort and learning, which stands in contrast to a fixed mindset, where talent and skills are perceived as innate and unchangeable.

Public defence of doctoral thesis | Exploring contexts for participation in daily and physical activities among adolescents with and without disabilities | Jennifer Gothilander, Mälardalen University, June 13, 2025

Jennifer Gothilander’s thesis Exploring contexts for participation in daily and physical activities among adolescents with and without disabilitiesemphasizes the importance of considering contexts broadly to promote adolescents' participation in daily and physical activities. Facilitating access and participation involves more than simply focusing on the activities. Future research should employ interdisciplinary multi-method designs to further investigate the participation construct, to examine the sports and physical exercise contexts for Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity more deeply.

Public defence of doctoral thesis | A Multiverse of Talent – Contemporary Understandings of Talent in Swedish and German Elite Youth Football | Leah Monsees, Malmö University, May 22,...

What is the meaning of talent? What do ancient people and the bible have to do with how we think about talent in the 21st century? And what happens when we deep-dive into the meanings and constructions of how talent is understood today? Does it mean anything at all? In her dissertation, Leah Monsees critically examines the contemporary constructions of talent in sports. Drawing from qualitative research of talent representations in German and Swedish contexts, Monsees explores talent understandings from a variety of angles.

Public Defense of doctoral thesis | From Cardiorespiratory Limitations through the Cancer Journey to Benefits of Cardio Training in Cancer Survivors: The Effect of Exercise Among Breast Cancer Survivors...

Many people know that cancer treatment can be tough, but fewer are aware that the effects can last for years. Regarding the tough course of cancer treatment that can also affect the healthy cells in the body, cancer survivors remain susceptible to late effects following therapy, including physical, psychological, and social challenges. This thesis provides compelling evidence of the substantial cardiorespiratory fitness decline occurring during and after systemic anticancer treatment, emphasizing the critical role of interventions to counteract these changes, such as exercise therapy.

Public Defense of doctoral thesis | Pivotal moments in needs-supportive environments: Experiences of Active Rehabilitation camps for individuals with acquired brain injury by Pia Wedege, Norwegian School of Sport...

The WHO aims to enhance community-based rehabilitation for individuals with a disability and recommends peer support as a tool for assisting in managing health and facilitating inclusion and participation. However, the knowledge about the impact of peer support in rehabilitation settings is limited, and there is a large variety in peer support programmes, which may affect the outcomes. Pia Wedege’s PhD project therefore aimed to investigate the experiences of individuals with acquired brain injury participating in community-based, peer-led activity camps in Norway

Public Defense of doctoral thesis | Taking a breather: Do physiological changes induced by growth during puberty outweigh those induced by endurance training in youth athletes? by Halvard Grendstad,...

For his dissertation, Halvard Grendstad investigated how endurance training affects boys and girls aged 12 to 14 years. The participants were recruited from two distinct groups: one group engaged in endurance sports, and another group who was less active and did not participate in endurance training. He tracked their development of maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂max) and assessed their physical growth, including lung size, heart function, and blood volume—key factors for fitness.

Public defence of doctoral thesis | Equestrian (Media) Cultures in Transition? Mediatization of Stable Cultures Through Social Media | Lovisa Broms, Malmö University, December 13, 2024

Lovisa Broms’ dissertation explores the transformative role of social media in shaping and reshaping stable cultures within equestrian sports. Although equestrianism is Sweden’s second-largest youth sport, there is a limited body of research on the impact of social media on its practices. Social media has expanded traditional stable cultures—once confined to physical spaces—into digital environments, where riders of all ages exchange knowledge, experiences, and insights.

Public defence of doctoral thesis | Physical activity, fitness, screen time and healthy brain functions in adolescents by Karin Kjellenberg, Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences | December...

The aim of this thesis was to investigate how accelerometer-measured physical activity, sedentary time, sports participation, fitness, and screen time were associated with healthy brain functions (mental health, cognitive, and academic performance), in a cohort of Swedish adolescents. Further, to examine how physiological factors underpinning healthy brain functions change acutely when prolonged sitting is interrupted with physical activity breaks.
