Public Defence of doctoral thesis | After a decade of the Delaware-Oslo ACL Cohort treatment algorithm: Measurement properties and outcomes after reconstruction or rehabilitation alone for anterior cruciate ligament...
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are either treated surgically (with ACL reconstruction; ACLR) or nonsurgically (with rehabilitation alone). High-quality studies are scarce but show similar outcomes after both treatment strategies. However, the treatment choice is only one part of the treatment process: intense rehabilitation, surgical indications, and patient education are also essential. Additionally, ACL patients are a heterogeneous group and do not follow a one-size-fits-all approach.
Public Defence of doctoral thesis | Physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiometabolic risk factors from childhood to young adulthood by Anders Husøy, Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, October 9,...
In the UngKan (Youth can do it) follow-up study Anders Husøy sought to examine the trends, levels, and associations of physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, and cardiometabolic risk factors from childhood (age 9 years) to adolescence (15 years) and further into young adulthood (age 24 years). In one study, he found that sedentary time increases from childhood to adolescence. A decrease from childhood to adolescence was seen for time spent in light, moderate, and vigorous physical activity.
Public defence of doctoral thesis | Exploring ways of empowering pupils in physical education through circus – an action research project | Matilda Lindberg, Malmö University, September 27, 2024
This study proposes changes to physical education. The aim of this action research project was to explore ways of empowering pupils in physical education. The study involves ten-year-old children from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, their physical education teacher, and a teacher-researcher. The study is at the intersection of three different fields in relation to physical education: influence, language, and creativity. Exploratory circus activities are used as a means to empower pupils and challenge the conventional structure of the subject.
Public defence of doctoral thesis | Conspicuous Fitness: Social Media, Fitspiration, and the Rise of the Exhibitionistic Self | Aurélien Daudi, Malmö University, September 20, 2024
Aurélien Daudi’s dissertation deals with the emergence, attraction, and normalization of a widespread, digital exhibitionism and its implications. In this age of imagery, the compulsive sharing of personal photographs on social media has become pervasive. Unabashedly narcissistic displays are all but encouraged. The study illuminates the profound impact of social media, challenging conventional wisdom and offering new insights into the relationship between technology, culture, and human behavior.
Public defence of doctoral thesis | Healthism and professional identity: Group fitness instructors navigating health discourses | Karin Andersson, Malmö University, September 9, 2024
Karin Andersson’s mixed methods dissertation employs a survey, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions to investigate the health consciousness of Les Mills International (LMI) group fitness instructors. Using Foucauldian concepts such as discourse and bio-power, the study examines instructors’ construction of their professional identity, and the link between professional identity and healthism, a discourse that promulgates health as an individual responsibility.

Public defense of doctoral thesis | Sustainable Development Goals Through Sport: An analysis of Policy Implementation in Ghana by Derrick Okpoti Charway, Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, June 12,...
The primary aim of Derrick Charway’s study was to analyze the policy goals and implementations of state and non-state sport organisations in Ghana and the extent to which they contribute to national development. This study addressed three of the 17 SDGs: healthy living (SDG 3), gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment (SDG 5), and disability (SDG 10). The findings revealed three common concerns that stood out: the non-involvement of local implementing actors, the restricted legitimacy of Sport for Development organisations, and skewed resources distribution to support football.
