This special issue intends to spark a revival of emotional discussions (and discussions about emotions) in leisure by drawing from a wide range of contexts, theoretical perspectives, and methodological considerations. Further research can provide greater understandings about both the individual and social processes by which leisure can contribute to (or be a detriment to) more holistic understandings of emotions.

Internationally, women and girls are consistently reported to have lower levels of engagement in community sport than men and boys. The aim of this Research Topic is to showcase high-quality research related to women and girls in community sport. This is to inform policy makers and guide organizations in their efforts to build a more equitable and inclusive future for women and girls in community sport.

It is difficult to find in the pantheon of champions of sports history a person who has received the same public attention as that of Diego Armando Maradona. Always on stage, always attracting everyone's attention, never an ordinary man. He was a great footballer, a great sportsman. His biography was full of extraordinary achievements and falls in sport and in life; he was a celebrity, fully integrated in the field of spectacular and commercialized sport.

The intended scope of this Research Topic is to collect manuscripts that focus on Olympic media from a critical perspective and therefore assist in developing the deeper body of knowledge described above. We invite submissions (Original Research, Reviews, Policy and Practice Reviews, Perspectives, and General Commentaries) that will advance our knowledge about Olympic-related media.

The overall purpose of this research theme is to advance current conceptions of – and critical reflection upon – the role, purpose and potential of sport, leisure, tourism and events (SLTE) in and for human society. The call is multi-disciplinary in nature but does require focus on one or more of the four elements in the proposed title, i.e. sport, leisure, tourism, and events.

Submission of contributions for this year’s issue is now open. Sport, History & Society is a peer-reviewed academic publication of sport history, leisure and recreation seated in Sweden and Scandinavia. Its scope, however, goes beyond the borders of Scandinavia, and we publish articles in English as well as in Scandinavian languages. Sport, History and Society invites prospective authors from across the globe to contribute.

Spectator sports represents one of society’s most universal leisure activities. While event attendance and media consumption have received a great deal of attention from scholars, there is a growing understanding that sports fans interact, both physically and digitally, with their favorite teams in numerous other ways. The aim of this Research Topic is to explore fan behaviors in many different areas, involving sports media and the (ever changing) digital environment.

We welcome submissions employing a range of disciplinary, methodological, and theoretical approaches. We define sport broadly and would welcome work in competitive, recreational, leisure and physical activity contexts, addressing the relationship between sport and community. That is, work should engage in some way beyond individuals and explore ideas of community, authenticity, relationships, context, place, collectivity, inclusion, belonging, social justice, or a common good.

Papers can address any sport discipline anywhere in the world. Authors are welcome to explore sport as a microcosm of society or even study the sportification of leisure and professional life. Ethnographies, case studies and media analyses are welcome, as well as broader theoretical interventions evaluating the interface between a cultural sociology of sport and closely related fields like sport sociology, sport management, youth studies, leisure studies, and media sociology.

We welcome cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural, cross-geographical submissions that explore a range of issues and diverse perspectives in order to contribute to the development of leisure theory, involving critical tourism and events studies, criminology, sociology, cultural and media studies, and other social science theoretical, methodological, and empirical entanglements. Indeed, what is considered 'transgressive' varies in different disciplines, cultures and societies.
