    Call for Papers | “The Cultural Sociology of Sport”, Special Issue of American Journal of Cultural Sociology. Call ends June 1, 2021

        • Guest editor: Trygve B. Broch, Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences.
        • Overseeing editor: Ronald N. Jacobs, State University of New York

    The American Journal of Cultural Sociology seeks proposals for papers for a special issue on the cultural sociology of sport. Few activities bring so many people together across the globe as the seemingly trivial play and seriousness of sports. This issue aims to showcase rigorous research that develops, or engages critically, with a meaning-centered sociological study of sport. Papers can address any sport discipline anywhere in the world. Authors are welcome to explore sport as a microcosm of society or even study the sportification of leisure and professional life. Themes to be considered might include, but are not limited to:

        • children and elite sport as social performances;
        • sport-like performances by social actors;
        • iconic sport venues, events and equipment;
        • sport heroes and anti-heroes, controversies and scandals;
        • aesthetic experiences in and through traditional or digital sports;
        • sports in social movements, civil actions and political protest; and
        • sports and the drama of climate change or COVID-19.

    Ethnographies, case studies and media analyses are welcome, as well as broader theoretical interventions evaluating the interface between a cultural sociology of sport and closely related fields like sport sociology, sport management, youth studies, leisure studies, and media sociology.

    The issue is tentatively scheduled to appear in February 2023. We welcome scholarship that represents a diverse array of global and/or underrepresented perspectives. Early career researchers are especially encouraged to submit proposals.

        • Proposal submission deadline: 1 June 2021
        • Manuscript submission deadline: 30 November 2021

    Submission Instructions

    Please submit by email your proposal of 1-3 pages (2000-3000 words) as a PDF or MSWord file to Proposals should be as detailed as possible and include a research question and a statement of the empirical and/or theoretical contribution of the piece. The results of the selection process will be communicated early August.

    Please address any questions about this special issue to Dr. Trygve Broch.
