This special issue is jointly edited by the journals:

Journals aims to examine, along a comparative spectrum, the global and local extent of the Maradona phenomenon. There are two thematic areas for solicited articles:

      1. Maradona, narratives, imaginaries and memory.
      2. Maradona as a sports phenomenon and celebrity in its social, identitary, economic and political dimensions.

It is difficult to find in the pantheon of champions of sports history a person who has received the same public attention as that of Diego Armando Maradona. Always on stage, always attracting everyone’s attention, never an ordinary man. He was a great footballer, a great sportsman. His biography was full of extraordinary achievements and falls in sport and in life; he was a celebrity, with a permanent planetary celebrity, fully integrated in the field of spectacular and commercialized sport; he was and remains a catalyst for conflicts – cultural, political, legal or simply material (such as those related to his economic legacy or the exploitation of image rights); he was, for various fan communities and generations, the idol and the hero with whom one could identify, apart from the sporting aspects; moreover, especially after his death, he certainly stands as a myth, as a significant role model, but also as a model of human contradictions. If the “pibe de oro” has easily become an important icon of popular culture and tradition both in Argentina and in Naples, the resonance of his figure and the planetary excitement that his death has caused lead to reflect on an international level on a global cultural phenomenon full of facets, interpretations and multiple reflections.
