Dear all,
Here, in the south of Sweden, summer has been clinging on throughout September with temperature above 20°C and sunny days with very few drops of rain. Leaves on trees and bushes are still predominantly green. A nd thus idrottsforum.org is still being run from a small summer house just outside Malmö. However, the weather forecast for the week starting today shows signs of changes to come. At the end of the week we’ll be down to 13°C. Next Monday we’ll report what that feels like,
The month of September 2024 will have seen four new dissertations in Sport Science having been publicly and successfully defended av the Department of Sport Sciences at Malmö University, an occurrence that’s quite unique. So, the Department have four new Doctors of Philosophy to its name: Karin Andersson with Healthism and Professional Identity: Group Fitness Instructors Navigating Health Discourse (September 9); Alexander Jansson with Likvärdighet i idrott och hälsa? [Equity in Physical Education?] (September 18); Aurélien Daudi with Conspicuous Fitness: Social Media, Fitspiration, and the Rise of the Exhibitionistic Self (September 20); and Matilda Lindberg with Exploring ways of empowering pupils in physical education through circus: An action research project (September 27). Click on titles to download the respective thesis.
Last week the following items were published on idrottsforum.org (see below; language and publication dates, YYMMDD, in brackets). Click on the red headings to go to content. Utilize the Google Translate service to turn Scandinavian language pages into (some sort of) English.
Have a great week,

Research Article
Aldersbestemte landslagsspillere i håndball sin opplevelse av eget utviklingsmiljø [Age-specific national team handball players’ experience of their own development environment]

Research into talented athletes has a strong tradition within sports sciences research where central questions deal with athletes’ development processes which take place in various phases and transitions. In this peer review article by Max Bergström, Ingrid Okkenhaug, Rune Høigaard & Stig Arve Sæther, a study of female and male Norwegian youth national team players (U19) in handball reveals their experience of their own development environment, and if there are gender differences in the players’ expectations related to a professional career as a senior player. (Published in Norwegian 240917; abstract in English available.
Book Reviews
Stakeholder Analysis and Sport Organisations, by Anna-Maria Strittmatter, Josef Fahlén & Barrie Houlihan (eds.)
Stakeholder Analysis and Sport Organisations, edited by Anna-Maria Strittmatter, Josef Fahlén & Barrie Houlihan (Routledge), provides a critical examination of the origins and development of stakeholder theory within sport management research. Thomas Persson’s review focuses on three of the contributions, and his overall assessment, based on the whole anthology, is that this is a book well worth reading that also is suitable as a course book. (Review in English, published 240919.)
Samisk idrott: Temanumer av Idrott, historia & samhälle [Sámi Sports: Special Issue of Sport, History & Society], by Isak Lidström & Helge Chr. Pedersen (eds.)

Idrott, historia & samhälle [Sport, History & Society] is a scientific forum for sports history research. It is primarily a platform for sports historians in Sweden and the rest of the Nordic countries. The 2023 special issue is titled “Ethnic relations in the sporting periphery: historical studies from the North Calotte” ans deals with Sámi sports. Ansgar Molzberger is our reviewer, and he finds the issue important and the articles interesting but would have liked a stronger link between the individual contributions and their categorization in a larger research context. (Review in English, published 240920.)
