Call for Book Chapters | A Critical Perspective on Parents and Under-Fives Pre-School Sport and Physical Activity | Abstract submission deadline July 14, 2023

The book will provide a socio-cultural lens on the expanding market for pre-school sport and physical activity.  This text comes at a significant time in the context of a growing marketplace for commercialised and franchised sport and PA in the UK for the under-fives. To date much of this research has focused on the development of children or on physiological measures of childhood activity. This ignores the social and cultural context in which children take part in Sport and PA. In the early years these decisions are taken by parents and caregivers, within the constraints of economic capital and what parents value and can afford for their children.

This text provides a wider understanding of how under-five Sport and PA can be understood and how parents’ decisions are shaped by economic, cultural, and changing family, work, and social settings. As early childhood is increasingly understood as a time where children are impacted by inequality, poverty and unequal access to opportunities, this text considers how access to enrichment activities may exacerbate inequalities in a post pandemic society and cost of living crisis.

 We are calling for contributions in the following areas (either theoretical or empirical chapters that focus on):

      2. Parenting cultures (present or historic on) pre-school Sport and PA
      3. Disability and inclusion in pre-school Sport and PA
      4. Family Cultures and pre-school Sport and PA
      5. Commercialization of Pre-School Sport and PA
      6. Social Class, Capital and Pre – School Sport and PA
      7. International / Global perspectives on Pre-School and PA
      8. Marketing of Pre-School and PA to parents and children

If you would like to contribute a chapter in these areas; Please contact us; Professor Philippa Velija at Philippa.velija@roehampton.ac.uk and Dr Georgia Allen georgia.allen@northumbria.ac.uk with a brief abstract (no more than 150 words) and a short biography by 14th July 2023.

 Full chapters

We propose that each chapter is of around 5,000 – 6,000 words.  While the timeframe for the project like is uncertain and subject to change we hope to put a full proposal to Routledge by end of July  2023, and receive first drafts of chapters by the end of January 2024.
