    Book Reviews

Shifting Currents: A World History of Swimming by Karen Eva Carr

Karen Eva Carr’s Shifting Currents: A World History of Swimming (Reaktion Books) is a comprehensive history of swimming, where that history functions as a new lens through which to gain a clearer view of race, gender and power on a centuries-long scale. We’ve been fortunate to engage as reviewer leading aquatic sports historian Dave Day, Manchester Metropolitan University. Relating Carr’s book to several previous histories of swimming, he finds her effort both stimulating, accessible and readable. (Review in English, published 221004.)

Degrees of Difficulty: How women’s gymnastics rose to prominence and fell from grace by Georgia Cervin

In her book Degrees of Difficulty: How women’s gymnastics rose to prominence and fell from grace (University of Illinois Press), Georgia Cervin offers a unique history of women’s gymnastics, examining how the high-stakes diplomatic rivalry of the Cold War created a breeding ground for exploitation. Our highly knowledgeable reviewer, with athletic as well as scholarly experiences of the subject is Laura Misener, and she is impressed and moved by Cervin’s insightful revelations. (Review in English, published 221007.)

Glimt i London: Hvorfor fotball engasjerer by Mads Skauge

. (Published in Norwegian 221006.)
