The consequences of gender policing in international professional sports have, in the last 20 years, had particular effects on the lives and careers of African women athletes, as they have been at the forefront of exposing the human rights abuses that have taken place under the guise of “gender eligibility” or “gender verification” policies. The South African runner Caster Semenya has been at the forefront of legal challenges against the “gender eligibility regulations” instituted by World Athletics. Alongside many others, Semenya has made a huge contribution to sharing knowledge about the human impact of gender policing in sport, highlighting that all women are adversely affected by such policies.
SportsAfrica Gender and Sexuality Working Group invites you to a panel discussion on Gender Policing in African Sporting Contexts.This webinar brings together a group of researchers, advocates and athletes in African sport to share their knowledge and expertise about questions of sex/gender policing and justice. The roundtable aims to kickstart a collaborative effort to share knowledge, best practices and advocacy strategies for abolishing gender policing and promoting gender inclusivity in African sport.
