Dear all,
The Midsummer celebrations are over, and, with that, so is the spring term for idrottsforum.org, at least as far as publishing original texts, that is, peer review, non-refereed and feature articles, and book reviews. There may be exceptions to that rule – in fact I know of one already – but a rule it is. Otherwise, expect journal presentations and Call for Papers to all kinds of event and publications during summer.
Last week the following items were published on idrottsforum.org (see below; language and publication dates, YYMMDD, in brackets). Click on the red headings to go to content. Utilize the Google Translate service to turn Scandinavian language pages into (some sort of) English.
And remember, if you’re not already hooked up to one of the social media outlets that we utilize, for now they are Facebook, LinkedIn and X, you’re missing quite a lot of information from idrottsforum.org that never appears on the website. So, if that is the case, check out, by clicking on the names, our Facebook, LinkedIn and X accounts.
I wish you all a very pleasant summer holiday,
Kjell Eriksson

Book Review
Women’s football is gaining ground, but it’s an uphill battle

Molly Yanity and Danielle Sarver Coombs’ edited collection Media, Communication and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup (Routledge) takes a close look at the themes of media and communication in the context of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, one of the most attended women’s sporting events in history. For our reviewer, sport event scholar Christian Tolstrup Jensen, the anthology’s value lies in the plurality of cases, the theories, and the diverse sources – in addition to being an analysis of a particular World Cup, a source for comparison with previous and future World Cups. (Review in English, published 250616.)
Idrottsmuseets i Göteborg årsbok 2024 – på västfronten mycket nytt [The Sports Museum in Gothenburg’s yearbook 2024 – a lot of new things on the western front]

The lively Sports Museum in Gothenburg includes in its activities the publication of a well-stocked yearbook, Idrottsarvet. We asked Anders Östnäs to review the latest edition and he found it very useful to chew on for those interested in sports history. A wealth of visual material helps to highlight both individual articles and the entire yearbook (Review in Swedish, published 250617.)
New book takes us beyond issues of violence and crowd control to political resistance and action

The anthology Social Control and Disorder in Football: Responses, Regulation, Rupture (Routledge), edited by Mark Turner and Jan Andre Lee Ludvigsen, shows how the ‘beautiful game’ illuminates our understanding of the mechanisms and techniques of social control and regulation in contemporary societies. In his review, Hans K. Hognestad appreciates that the book extends beyond issues of violence and crowd control since football in many places remains one of few public platforms for expressing not only patriotic identities but also various forms of political resistance. (Review in English, published 250618.)
