Since the beginning of skiing in the late 19th century, females have been part of this winter activity and its various disciplines. There are even sources of ski jumping women in Norway in the late 19th century. However, women’s contributions to the development of skiing and female skiers´ biographies have been very much neglected in the research concerning skiing history and its socio-cultural discourse. It is only in recent years that the contribution of females to skiing has slowly begun to be researched.
This 3-day-conference will focus on Women and Skiing from an international perspective. Various time periods will be considered. However, the conference will be open to a general gender discourse about skiing, such as masculinities and transgender issues, as well as other topics relating to the history of skiing and winter sports.
The conference is supported by the Transnational Working Group for the Study of Gender and Sport.
