Do we need another collection of sociology of sport articles? Our reviewer thinks so.

The Oxford Handbook of Sport and Society, edited by Lawrence A, Wenner (Oxford UP), features leading international scholars’ assessments of scholarly inquiry about sport and society. Divided into six sections, chapters consider dominant issues within key areas, approaches featured in inquiry, and debates needing resolution. Our reviewer is Richards Giulianotti, who edited the Sage four volume set The Sociology of Sport in 2012, and he finds that this new collection, some unnecessary omissions notwithstanding, is a welcome addition to the existing list of handbooks in the field.

NEW BOOK REVIEW | The edited volume Sport and Physical Activity across the Life Span: Critical Perspectives by Rylee A. Dionigi & Michael Gard (Palgrave Macmillan) offers critical perspectives on the axiomatic Sport for All credo – that sport is also Good for all. Mark Brooke finds much to praise in this collection of myth-busting essays.

Two text books on the sociology of sport that probably work best together

In this original review for idrottsforum.org, Jay Coakley takes on two introductory textbooks in the sociology of sport, Sport Sociology by Peter Craig and Sport and Society, edited by Barrie Houlihan & Dominic Malcolm (both Sage Publications). His critical analysis from the point of view of the academic teacher leads him to a well-argued conclusions that will be rewarding reading for teachers as well as for the respective author/editors.
