Successful Norwegian textbook about exercise theory

Jostein Hallén’s and Lars Tore Ronglan’s Treningslære for idrettene [Exercise theory for sports] (Fagbokforlaget) is based on the nature of the sports. Specific training must be combined with variety to stimulate the learning and training yield, and the training must contain a progression, where loads and challenges are gradually increased. Stephen Garland has had the first edition as required reading for his students, and he rather prefers that to this revised second edition. All in all, he concludes his review (in English and Swedish), it’s a very useful book.

Described by the publisher as an array of research project abstracts, Exploring Research in Sports Coaching and Pedagogy: Context and Contingency (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, edited by Charles L. T. Corsby & Christian N. Edwards), comprises five parts and 19 chapters over a mere 187 pages. Still, our reviewer Marie Hedberg, well versed in this field, found a good overview of theories and of areas where they can be used, but she questions the generalisability of the results in the various chapters.

Engaging with uncertainty in athlete development – orchestrating talent development through incremental leadership | A summary

In this feature article, Christian Thue Bjørndal and Lars Tore Ronglann summarize their recent article from Sport, Education and Society in which they argue for a new perspetive on sports coaching, beyond traditional models and supporting a view of the coach as orchestrator. Coaching as well as athlete development will, they claim, be substatially improved with the application of a model of incremental leadership.
