Samhällsidrotten och idrottssamhället. Humanistisk och samhällsvetenskaplig idrottsforskning under 50 år [Sport in society and the society of sports. Humanistic and social science sports research over 50 years] is edited by Tomas Peterson and published as a celebration of 50 years of Swedish sport studies within the social sciences and humanities. We went abroad to find a suitable reviewer – not a Swede but Swedish speaking – and Ansgar Molzberger accepted the cumbersome task of reviewing this 556 page tome. And he did well, we are happy to bring his review to your attention.

Academics in various disciplines are writing about sport. Sport in Society is a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary forum for academics to discuss the growing relationship of sport to significant areas of modern life. The Forum Editor’s pick from the current issue: Coaching by doing: communities of practice at Swedish sport schools in XC skiing since the 1970s by Daniel Svensson (open access).

Sedan historikern Jan Lindroth disputerade med sin avhandling om idrotten som folkrörelse 1974 har det gått ett halvt sekel, och således firar svensk idrottsforskning sitt femtioårsjubileum 2024. Under perioden har idrottsvetenskap vuxit fram som ett nytt utbildnings-, forsknings- och forskarutbildningsämne. Idag finns det idrottsvetenskapliga institutioner eller motsvarande vid tio lärosäten, och fem av dem har forskarutbildning. Forskningsämnena, som från början var pedagogik, historia och psykologi, omfattar idag över trettio olika ämnesdiscipliner.

What values should children and young people learn in sport? What does the ideal of fair play entail? How can we justify the ban on doping in sport? These are some of the ethical issues in sports that Sigmund Loland, sport philosophy professor at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences discusses in Idrettsetikk (Fagbokforlaget). Kutte Jönsson, our resident sport philosopher underlines the importance of continually considering ethics in sports, and he sees Sigmund Loland as an excellent interlocutor and cicerone for those discussions.

SISU Förlags ambitiösa trebandsutgåva Sport Management 1–3, under redaktion av Åsa Bäckström, Karin Book, Bo Carlsson och PG Fahlström, får genomgående positiva omdömen av idrottsforum.orgs recensenter, Søren Bennike som recenserade del 1 i oktober 2019, och Julius Z. Strömberg i föreliggande recension av delarna 2 och 3. Strömberg efterlyser visserligen ett nordiskt perspektiv men ser inte den bristen som ett hinder för att använda böckerna när han lär ut sport management på Norges idrettshøgskole.

I idrottskulturen framträder tränaren i ett särskilt ljus. Med sin nya bok Tränaretik (SISU Idrottsböcker) vill Kutte Jönsson uppmuntra till etisk reflektion, såväl över tränarskapets inneboende natur som över konkreta fall, för aktiva tränare, tränare under utbildning och alla andra som på olika sätt har med idrottsträning att göra. Vår recensent Christian Thue Bjørndal välkomnar trots önskemål om viss fördjupning bokens moralfilosofiska och etiska perspektiv på tränarrollen och tränarens verksamhet.

När coronapandemin slog till i början av 2020 drabbades världen – och sportvärlden – på ett sätt som ingen kunnat förutse. I en fin poetisk-filosofisk betraktelse undersöker filosofen och profesorn i idrottsvetenskap Kutte Jönsson vad pandemin och frånvaron av en fysiskt närvarande publik på sportevenemangen kom att innebära för idrotten, och mer specifikt för fotbollen; det handlar om idrottens själ, och det blev tydligt att läktarkulturen är en odiskutabel del av denna själ.

Philosophical aspects and understandings of association football have been the subject of a few books lately. Stephen Mumford’s Football: The Philosophy Behind the Game (Polity Press) adds an aesthetic dimension to the philosophical gaze, as is his want. Kutte Jönsson reads Mumford’s book in light of the Covid-19 pandemic – It’s hard to do otherwise these days, but this does not reflect badly on the book, on the contrary.

The considerable growth of interest in commerce, media and politics and their relationship to sport in international academia has resulted in academics in various disciplines writing about sport.
