Studying Socio-economic Effects of Sport
Björn Anders Larsson
Nordic Evaluation Group (NORDEG) / Idrottsekonomiskt Centrum (IEC)
This text discusses the concepts of “value creation” and “ benefit” and in particular the concept of “economic benefit”. Different methods to define and delimit and calculate these concepts are discussed in its application to sports, event and sporting communities.
All activities, products or services, i.e., their characteristics, quality and prices correspond in some sense, to the preferences of citizens or organizations or to political and democratic decisions. This also applies to various sporting activities and offerings.
The purpose of this report is to create a foundation for a knowledge platform for further development of economic analyses that we often encounter in various sectors of society. The author works with such analyses in different sporting contexts, in health care, in local and regional growth, etc. This field of knowledge is central to analyzing results in micro and macro economics. The author’s own theses and research projects include analysis of how inter-organizational (collaboration between organizations) processes create effects and thus how effective and how ineffective processes arise. The perspective is central, for example, to follow-up studies and evaluation research within projects of development and change in various parts of society.
