The aim of the study was to investigate how Swedish teachers in Physical Education plans and executes a well-operated education in friluftsliv. Previous research has shown that PE teachers in Sweden find it problematic to achieve well-working teaching in Friluftsliv. These problems are, for instance, that teachers experience a lack of geographical space, insufficient economic resources, or find friluftsliv too time-consuming (Seger 2012; Novus 2016; Backman 2011a).  For this study, six semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers teaching at various levels in Swedish schools. They all saw themselves having a well-operated education in Friluftsliv. The interviews were transcribed and thematised. The quotes were analyzed in relation to what the teachers wanted with their education and what they could achieve in relation to their resources in what we call good quality friluftsliv. The teachers’ underlying thoughts about their teaching-concepts were analyzed with Schenker’s (2010) model for sports didactic analysis.

The study shows possibilities to see past the problem shown in previous research. What the teachers in the study emphasize are (1) the importance of working with the progression from activity toadventure , and (2) the teachers’ own responsibility to acquire knowledge about friluftsliv. This gives the teachers good conditions to adapt the teaching from existing prerequisites. The conclusion of the study is that if a teacher acquires extra knowledge about friluftsliv, succeeds in dividing the subject into parts, see it not being limited to a specific place, and adapts to the current conditions, it is possible to develop a well-functioning education in friluftsliv.
