This event will showcase new research and work-in-progress investigating the role of language in shaping our understanding of gender and sexuality in sports contexts. It aims to critically interrogate the discourses that create, sustain and challenge inequalities within this field.

We welcome contributions from a wide range of disciplines that tie into the theme of the one-day conference. Possible topics could include, but are not limited to:

      • The language of men’s and women’s sports, including comparative analyses
      • Discourses of inclusion and exclusion, particularly those surrounding trans and intersex participation in sports
      • Homophobic language in sports contexts
      • Identity construction of athletes, coaches and managers
      • Discourses in sports fan communities
      • Sports professionals’ talk in private and public settings

Presentations should be no more than 20 minutes in length. Abstracts should not exceed 300 words (excluding title and references) and should be sent to lgassig15@gmail.com by 11 December 2023.

The event aims to bring together scholars working on relevant topics with activists and practitioners in relevant sectors and, as such, we invite contributions from both areas.

    * The Language, Gender and Sexuality Special Interest Group, a subsidiary of the British Association for Applied Linguistics. The event is being organised on behalf of the SIG by Dr Aimee Bailey (De Montfort University) and Dr Lucy Jones (University of Nottingham).
