The 2020 Football Collective annual conference will take place in the port city of Portsmouth on 26th and 27th November, bringing the collective of football researchers, practitioners and scholars together to the South Coast of England for the first time. Portsmouth is a dynamic and vibrant waterfront city rich in football as well as nautical history. The only island city in the U.K., Portsmouth is home to Portsmouth Football Club, a club founded in 1898 and who still play in their original ground.
Call for Papers
The committee of the 2020 Football Collective Conference invites researchers, practitioners and scholars to submit abstracts to be considered for presentation. We invite proposals for oral presentations, posters/exhibits, and workshops/symposiums (which can be applied for as multiple slots with multiple contributors under one theme).
It’s (not) just a game: Football’s evolving culture
The 2020 conference theme is “Football’s evolving culture”. In that respect, submissions that particularly, but not exclusively, relate to the conference theme/s are encouraged. As we enter 2020 and a new decade, there are a number of challenges and opportunities for football that are becoming evident. With the UK leaving the European Union the impact and effect of this action on the game in the UK is unknown, but it will inevitably influence decision making and governance, particularly in the Premier League. In addition, the next tv rights deal is starting to be negotiated. With the rise of online streaming, and the success of Amazon’s first foray into the tv rights packages, the future of broadcasting could be different, and the cost of these rights shows little sign of reversing. Additionally, the professionalism of women’s football is bringing new pressures associated with its increased visibility.
Drawing on research undertaken by members of the Football Collective, the 2020 Annual Conference will seek to scrutinise the culture of football, and how this culture is evolving. Research will try and find solutions that will benefit clubs, their players, their fans and their local communities and help to explain and define this evolving culture.

The conference is designed to offer opportunities for all to present research, research ideas, potential projects, and innovative methods of data collection or public engagement. Thus it aims to discuss research that (a) has been undertaken, to share findings and gain insight and feedback on data analysis, representation, and potential outputs (b) is being proposed as a potential option for the Football Collective group to understand an existing issue or (c) has been published, to share findings and discuss future research needs.
We particularly encourage submissions from PhD scholars and early career researchers.
Deadline for submissions: 11th September 2020
Abstracts and Submissions
Please submit a Word document containing your paper title, a 250 word abstract, and author information including full name, institutional affiliation, email address, and a 50-word bio to footballcollective2020@gmail.com by 11th September 2020. A maximum of 15 minutes will be allocated to each conference paper, with up to 1 hour allocated for workshops/symposiums (depending on number of related papers).
We also welcome proposals for film screenings, performances etc and particularly encourage submissions from PhD scholars and early career researchers.
Notifications regarding acceptance will be sent by 2nd October 2020.
