Dear all,

Illustration by Hedvig Halldenius, 2023.I hope the new year got off on the right foot.
Most readers, I think, are aware of the fact that we never publish original contributions, such as articles and book reviews, during the interterm breaks for summer and winter. So except for two interesting book reviews and a blog post by David Rowe that didn’t make it  into the last newsletter before the Christmas holiday, what you will find below is a number of Calls for Papers that were published intermittently over the holidays.
Normally you would also encounter a number of new issue presentations of scholarly journals during this period. However, this service is under review, since it’s a rather time-consuming undertaking.
So, the following items were published on idrottsforum.org over the holidays (see below; language and publication dates, YYMMDD, in brackets). Click on the red headings to go to content. Utilize the Google Translate service to turn Scandinavian language pages into (some sort of) English.
Have a great week,
Kjell Eriksson

Political Expression in Sport: Transnational Challenges, Moral Defences, by Cem Abanazir

Naomi Osaka’s peaceful protest against systemic racism in the US at the 2020 US Open. Read more here.

In Political Expression in Sport: Transnational Challenges, Moral Defences (Routledge), Cem Abanazir looks at how private institutions governing and organising sport restrict political expression. Uniquely, it makes a case for the freedom of expression for athletes, spectators and audiences built upon philosophical foundations. Guy Osborn is our reviewer, and he appreciates this well-researched and authoritative book that’s tapping into an issue of significant contemporary importance. A useful addition to the literature. (Review in English, published 231219.)

De nordiska lekarna: Grannländer i pressen under olympiska vinterspel [Nordic play and games: Newspaper representations of neighbours at Olympic winter games], by Martin Johansson

Martin Johansson submitted his doctoral thesis De nordiska lekarna: Grannländer i pressen under olympiska vinterspel (Södertörn University) in April 2023. Based on Swedish, Norwegian and Swedish-Finnish media reporting from three Olympic Winter Games in 1936, 1968 and 1994, Johansson examines the relationship between Nordic and national collective identities. Peter Dahlén finds that this is an inspiring thesis that breaks new ground in sports history, towards a broader popular culture and media flora. (Review in English, published 231220.)

Half-watched TV and part-heard radio: summer Test cricket is steeped in nostalgia, but these ‘traditions’ have short histories, by David Rowe

As the old year passes and a new one arrives, three notable sport events occupy the languid vacation hours. Melbourne’s Boxing Day and Sydney’s New Year’s Test matches are spliced by the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Unlike the race, a set-piece seasonal spectacle notable mainly for its Rolex-sponsored affluence, picturesque helicopter shots, and (seemingly) AI-generated reporting, the cricket stirs strong emotions. Many people are seduced by the nostalgic notion that no Australian summer is complete without two metropolitan Test matches played on green fields. (Published in English 231228.)
