That Was The Week That Was,
November 4–10, 2024

Dear all,

Remember remember, the 5th of November… That quote usually refers to Guy Fawkes attempt to blow up the House of Lords in 1605. Last week’s US elections gave us another memory related to that date.
I’d like to point to the last news item at the bottom of this page. Yes, the book that I’ve been going on about this fall is now almost done, it’s with the printers and is expected to be delivered in less than a week. Almost entirely in Swedish…
Last week the following items were published on idrottsforum.org (see below; language and publication dates, YYMMDD, in brackets). Click on the red headings to go to content. Utilize the Google Translate service to turn Scandinavian language pages into (some sort of) English.
Have a great week,

The quest for legitimacy: Discussing the rational myth inherent in ‘Sport for development and peace’

In Niklas Hafen’s peer review article published by Scandinavian Sport Studies Forum, two Scandinavian SDP programs serve as examples: LdB FC for Life in South Africa (sport and HIV/AIDS prevention) and Open Fun Football Schools in Moldova (sport and peace building). Drawing on a case study methodology, representatives involved in these cases have been interviewed, and observations in South Africa and Moldova have been made targeting the practical implementation of each endeavor. The aim of the article is to analyze the relationship between rhetoric and practice surrounding both projects. (Published in English 241107.

Book Reviews

Olympic Laws: Culture, Values, Tensions, by Mark James & Guy Osborn

Mark James and Guy Osborn’s Olympic Laws: Culture, Values, Tensions (Routledge) is the first book to analyse fully the Olympic legal framework and its application to the IOC and the Olympic Games through a socio-legal lens. According to our reviewer Jan Andre Lee Ludvigsen, their analysis drives forward debates in the social and political scientific study of sport, and will figure as an important resource for researchers and students within all these areas in the years to come. Introduction to Sport Marketing: Third edition, by Aaron C.T. Smith, Constantino Stavros, James Skinner, Andrea N. Geurin & Lauren M. Burch

Viktor Magnusson reviewed the first edition of Introduction to Sport Marketing for idrottsforum.org back in 2010. Now in its third edition, with a new publisher (Routledge) and the addition of four more authors, it was again sent to Viktor for a review. The collective efforts of Aaron C.T. Smith, Constantino Stavros, James Skinner, Andrea N. Geurin and Lauren M. Burch have resulted in a considerably better book; it has been brought up to date, every chapter has an improved introduction, and it includes case descriptions instead of links to cases on the ’net. (Review in English, published 230516.)
