From Talent to Qualification: A Sociological and Methodological Discussion of Player Talent Identification

(Freepik)

In this peer review article Henrik Fürst proposes a reassessment of the concept of talent and offers tools for a conceptual and methodological shift in the study of talent identification in sports. Drawing on American pragmatism, specifically the pragmatic maxim, the article aims to clarify the concept of talent in talent identification that makes an athlete open for selection. The article organizes, presents, and discusses existing research on talent identification and highlights the need for a conceptual reevaluation. Book Reviews

Social Issues in Esports, by Anne Tjønndal (ed.)

(Photo by Florian Olivo on Unsplash)

Bringing together leading esports experts from Europe, North America, and Australia, Anne Tjønndal’s edited collection Social Issues in Esports (Routledge) provides new sociological analyses that define and locate esports in social studies. Kalle Jonasson, who wrote about esports on idrottsforum.org already back in 2005, is highly appreciative of Tjønndal’s book, notwithstanding the fact that he would have liked to see a bit more of conceptual and philosophical thinking around the social issues surrounding esports. The United States of Sport: Media Framing and Influence of the Intersection of Sports and American Culture by Kenon A. Brown, Joshua Dickhaus & Mia Long Anderson (Peter Lang Publishing) looks at how media outlets portrayed important intersections in politics, culture and sports. Steph Doehler, while genuinely impressed by the book and generally appreciative of the authors’ efforts, still finds room for improvement and offers suggestions of ways to accomplish that.
