Reversal, normalization and self-care – three logics of countering body shame through fitness activities among young Danes

This article by Carsten Stage and Stinne Bach Nielsen explores the relationship between body shame and fitness through interviews with 20 young Danes (age 15–24) who use a fitness centre at least twice a week as part of a process of self-defined bodily transformation. The analysis shows that body shame is a well-known feeling for a vast majority of the informants and that fitness is used by them to counter body shame in three ways that are analyzed in the article. Book Reviews
Justice for Trans Athletes: Challenges and Struggles, by Ali Durham Greey & Helen Jefferson Lenskyj (eds.)

Arguably, trans people are subject to discrimination, or worse. Whether or not they are also, as trans athletes, discriminated in sports is a moot point. In a new edited collection, Justice for Trans Athletes: Challenges and Struggles by Ali Durham Greey & Helen Jefferson Lenskyj (Emerald), the contributors argue for full inclusion of transwomen athletes in the female category of competitive sports. Our reviewer, legal and political philosopher Miroslav Imbrišević is a well-known exponent of the opposite view. (Review in English, published 230328.)
Sport and Secessionism, by Mariann Vaczi & Alan Bairner (eds.)
Sport and Secessionism, edited by Mariann Vaczi and Alan Bairner (Routledge), examines how sporting cultures reflect, inform and sometimes frustrate secessionist movements around the world by investigating a wide range of cases. Our reviewer is Norwegian historian Matti Goksøyr, and his insightful presentation and critical assessment of the collection reveals new takes, new examples and hence new perspectives and more nuances to the ways sport can operate and be applied in secessionist contexts. (Review in English, published 230331.)
