Dear all,
The other day I succumbed to the need for recognition and appreciation other than the page views stats, that are settling at the tolerable levelof c. 5,000 unique views per week. So I logged on to routledge.com and searched for “idrottsforum”. The search returned 63 book pages, each with a quotation from a review of that particular book on idrottsforum.org. Very rewarding. Though it turns out that we have published reviews of almost 400 Routledge titles, only about one fourth of those are in English. So, all in all, a thoroughly satisfying result. As you will se if you keep reading this Newsletter, all three reviews published last week, purely by coincidence, are of Routledge books.
Last week the following items were published on idrottsforum.org (see below; language and publication dates, YYMMDD, in brackets). Click on the red headings to go to content. Utilize the Google Translate service to turn Scandinavian language pages into (some sort of) English.
Have a great week,
Kjell Eriksson

Book Reviews
Esports Insights, by Emily Hayday, Holly Collison-Randall & Sarah Kelly
In Esports Insights (Routledge), Emily Hayday, Holly Collison-Randall and Sarah Kelly outline the fundamental characteristics, features, and structures of the rapidly growing esports industry. Featuring international case studies in every chapter, the book offers an introduction for readers without any prior knowledge of esports. It is well received by our reviewer Egil Trasti Rogstad, whose PhD project concerns various aspect of electronic sports, and it gave him insight into new areas of esports. (Review in English, published 230130.)
Philosophy, Sport, and the Pandemic, by Jeffrey P. Fry & Andrew Edgar (eds.)
The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on every aspect of our social, cultural, and commercial lives, including the world of sport. Philosophy, Sport, and the Pandemic, edited by Jeffrey P. Fry and Andrew Edgar (Routledge), examines the ethical and philosophical dimensions of the intersection of COVID-19 and sport. Shawn Klein finds some really good contributions, but also chapters that are repetitive, or not sufficiently philosophical, or where the Covid relevance is tenuous. Recommendable, thus, but with qualifications. (Review in English, published 230201.)
Athlete Transitions into Retirement: Experiences in Elite Sport and Options for Effective Support, by Deborah Agnew (ed.)
Transitions in sport can be more or less predictable or even planned; either way those are critical times in the development of athletes’ careers. This is the subject of Deborah Agnew’s edited collection Athlete Transitions into Retirement: Experiences in Elite Sport and Options for Effective Support (Routledge). Christian Augustsson’s creditable review highlights several important contributions to the book and the research field, that show the complexity of the process and the need for support for athletes. (Review in English, published 230203.)
New Blog Post
Weser Stadion, Bremen, January 2023, by Leah Monsees
It is early afternoon and most of the people walking to the Weser Stadion on this sunny Saturday are in a good mood. Most of them are drinking. After all, it’s Saturday – AND football. The vendors on the way to the stadium are selling beer for 2€. Not cheap, but a good deal in Germany. A perfect way to stay hydrated. One last run to the beer stand. The game begins. This is how Leah Monsees’ debut post to the Forum blog starts. (Published in English 230202.)
