Dansk fodbold sætter tal på den gode træneradfærd [Danish football puts numbers on good coaching behavior]

The purpose of this Danish language article by Søren Bennike, Claes Madsen, Peter Elsborg and Glen Nielsen is to present how Danish football puts numbers on good coaching behavior in children’s and youth football (6-19 years) and at the same time convey the current status. The method is based on a larger research study, which shows that empowering coaching behavior contributes to creating continuity, whereas a dis-empowering coaching behavior – that is one-sidedly, results-focused and controlling/authoritarian – makes kids drop out of sports. Book Reviews

International Football as Cultural Diplomacy: Britain Versus the Dictators in the 1930s, by Peter J. Beck

England players give the Nazi salute in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.

Drawing on wide-ranging archival research, International Football as Cultural Diplomacy: Britain Versus the Dictators in the 1930s by Peter J. Beck (Routledge) examines the cultural diplomatic role played by British football in international affairs, British foreign policy, and international football during the 1930s. Kristian Gerner’s knowledgeable review hails Beck’s efforts to demonstrate the failure of Britain’s pre-war politics of appeasement, while also underlining that Beck’s book is really a book about soccer and a good read for football aficionados. In the edited collection Athletics in the Nordic Countries: History and Development, edited by Jörg Krieger, scholars from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden explore historical developments and current phenomena in the sport of athletics. The authors provide insight into sport officials, events, and athletes from the Nordic countries that have shaped the international athletics scene. In his review, Alan Bairner presents the basic features of a book that obliges the reader to think about what this most accessible of sports is and what it could be, for good or ill.
