Book Reviews
Gender Equality and the Olympic Programme, by Michele K. Donnelly

In Gender Equality and the Olympic Programme (Routledge), Michele Donnelly examines the Olympic programme from a critical feminist perspective, to shed new light on the issues of gender and inclusion at the Olympic Games and in the Olympic Movement. Our reviewer Christian Widholm finds empirically substantiated conclusions that the claims of gender equality in the Games from the IOC are not quite true; behind it lies a clever strategy of creative counting. Quantitative equality does not necessarily align with qualitative equality. (Review in English, published 250211.)
Idrættens og civilsamfundets knaster: Kritiske samfundsvidenskabelige analyser [The intersections of sport and civil society: Critical social science analyses], by Evald Bundgård Iversen, Bjarne Ibsen & Jørn Hansen (eds.)

In the anthology Idrættens og civilsamfundets knaster: Kritiske samfundsvidenskabelige analyser (Syddansk Universitetsforlag), the various authors take a closer look at some of the issues in sport and civil society that are often discussed. Each section addresses current social science issues from a critical angle with the aim of creating new insights that can help overcome “knots” and create changes in civil society and sport. The anthology, here reviewed by Mats Franzén, is published on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Center for Research in Sport, Health and Civil Society. (Book in Danish, review in Swedish, published 250213.)
Rugby, Soccer and Irish Society: 1921-1990, by Conor Murray

Conor Murray’s Rugby, Soccer and Irish Society: 1921-1990 (Routledge) is an all-island history of rugby union and association football, two of the three most popular male sporting pastimes in Ireland, across the seven decades that followed the political partition of that country between 1920 and 1922. Our knowledgeable reviewer Conor Curran wonders about the time frame – why not end in 1998? – and a couple of lacunae in the bibliography, but is generally appreciative of Murray’s effort. (Review in English, published 260214.)
