Dear all,
In many countries this first day of the month of May is also a day when people are walking or marching in large groups, more often than not carrying posters, streamers or flags. There will be shouting of slogans and singing as well. This, I think, is a splendid way to combine politics with a bit of physical activity.

Book Reviews
Teaching Sports Economics and Using Sports to Teach Economics, by Victor A. Matheson & Aju J. Fenn (eds.)
There is a dire need for a comprehensive pedagogical resource both on diverse approaches to teaching sports economics and the use of sports to teach broader principles of economic concepts. The contributions in Teaching Sports Economics and Using Sports to Teach Economics, edited by Victor A. Matheson & Aju J. Fenn (Edward Elgar) seek to remedy that. Our reviewer, Kjetil K. Haugen, finds some serious flaws in the book, but also successful attempts at providing productive pedagogical pointers. (Review in English, published 230425.)
The Oxford Handbook of Sport and Society, by Lawrence A. Wenner (ed.)
The Oxford Handbook of Sport and Society, edited by Lawrence A, Wenner (Oxford UP), features leading international scholars’ assessments of scholarly inquiry about sport and society. Divided into six sections, chapters consider dominant issues within key areas, approaches featured in inquiry, and debates needing resolution. Our reviewer is Richards Giulianotti, who edited the Sage four volume set The Sociology of Sport in 2012, and he finds that this new collection, some unnecessary omissions notwithstanding, is a welcome addition to the existing list of handbooks in the field. (Review in English, published 230426.)
Serving Equality: Feminism, Media, and Women’s Sports, by Cheryl Cooky & Dunja Antunovic
Cheryl Cooky & Dunja Antunovic’s Serving Equality: Feminism, Media, and Women’s Sports (Peter Lang Publishing) offers a much-needed methodological innovation to sports media research by expanding the focus beyond traditional sports media outlets to examine the diversity of media outlets writing about sports. Katie Taylor’s review outlines the different chapters and traces the authors’ line of reasoning, finding, in conclusion, a valuable book for students and academics of both sports and media. (Review in English, published 230427.)
The League of Ireland: An Historical and Contemporary Assessment, by Conor Curran (ed.)
2021 saw the centenary of the formation of the League of Ireland, the Republic of Ireland’s primary professional association football league. The League of Ireland: An Historical and Contemporary Assessment, edited by Conor Curran (Routledge), draws on the work of a number of leading historians of Irish soccer. Originally published as a 2021 Special Issue of Soccer & Society, our reviewer Dilwyn Porter sees much to commend in the collection but finds the links to the league in the various contributions less evident than expected. (Review in English, published 230428.)
