A highly enjoyable and stimulating mixed bag of short stories from the history of sport

Peace and war, or camaraderie and struggle, are keywords for a lot of sports – and for Matti Goksøyr’s long and impressive work as a researcher. He earned his doctorate at the NIH in 1991 and became professor of sports history eight years later. In December 2022 he turned 70, and how better to celebrate that than with a Festschrift. Christian Tolstrup Jensen enjoyed reading Fred og krig: Festskrift til Matti Goksøyr [Peace and war: Festschrift to Matti Goksøyr], edited by Gudmund Skjeldal & Allan Bennich Grønkjær.

A fascinating portrayal of European sports history

Daphné Bolz’ and Michael Krüger’s edited and profusely illustrated collection A History of Sport in Europe in 100 Objects (Arete Verlag) is the first attempt to create a kaleidoscopic history of European sport through its rich material culture. In his thorough, knowledgeable and cogent assessment of the book, our reviewer Conor Curran is highly appreciative of the editors’ huge achievement while still pointing out several omissions, often related to the dark sides of sport – violence, drugs, corruption, etc.

New book about sports as a potential force in political struggles for independence and sovereignty

Sport and Secessionism, edited by Mariann Vaczi and Alan Bairner (Routledge), examines how sporting cultures reflect, inform and sometimes frustrate secessionist movements around the world by investigating a wide range of cases. Our reviewer is Norwegian historian Matti Goksøyr, and his insightful presentation and critical assessment of the collection reveals new takes, new examples and hence new perspectives and more nuances to the ways sport can operate and be applied in secessionist contexts.

Blandet fornøjelse – gode og mindre gode norske indspark

Identities, Ethnicities, Histories and Sports in Northern Norway

Daniel Svensson has read Utafor sporet? Idrett, identiteter og regionalisme i nord [Off the beaten track: Sports, identity and regionalism in the north] (Oplandske Bokforlag), an anthology edited by Helge Chr. Pedersen och Eivind Å. Skille. Our reviewer is mostly content, but would have liked further comparative efforts.
