The University of Ottawa is pleased to announce a Call for Abstracts for the 17th Canadian Congress on Leisure Research, the triennial conference of the Canadian Association for Leisure Studies (CALS), which will take place in Ottawa, Canada, May 23-26, 2023. While Canadian leisure research has expanded and grown during the last half century there has been and there continues to be significant gaps and deficiencies in Canadian leisure research.

Since that time, the ASMA conference has matured into a preeminent event for applied sport research, sport practitioner panels, student case study competitions, and student research competitions. The ASMA conference now attracts national and international audiences and in recent years has benefited tremendously from being hosted by schools such as Ball State, Baylor, Belmont, Samford, and Schreiner.

The CSSOR Program Committee welcomes high quality academic work on sport studies topics such as race, gender, politics, legacy, youth, or disability. Proposed research papers focusing on broader sociocultural topics within sport are welcomed in addition to research specifically addressing the Olympic Movement. Scholars in the fields of, for instance, history, philosophy, management, communication, ancient and modern languages, literature, and law are encouraged to submit proposals or attend the conference.

When several hundred international journalists, academics, sport leaders, athletes and others with an interest in international sports politics convene in Odense for the 2022 edition of Play the Game, it happens at a dramatic turning point in sports politics. After a major doping scandal and the invasion in Ukraine, Russia's power in sport is shrinking, and the question of who and what will fill the power gap left behind will be prominent on the conference’s agenda.
