The body has been, and will continue to be, an area of intense interest in academia. We are proud to announce our third annual virtual conference focused on historical and other humanities-based approaches to the study of physical culture. We define physical culture as “the various activities people have employed over the centuries to strengthen their bodies, enhance their physiques, increase their endurance, improve their health, fight against aging, and become better athletes.”

The theme of the 2023 Annual Congress for the ISSA takes this call to “engage [our] various publics” as its point of departure and extends this call to question how we define and then work with, within and through our “various publics” in our research, scholarship, and teaching. In particular, we invite scholars to share their insights on and experiences of engaging in research, scholarship and teaching with, within and through their local communities.

Call for Participants | International Football History Conference 2022 | City Football Academy, Manchester City Football Club, November 18–19, 2022.

The inaugural International Football History Conference was staged in 2017 and proved popular with leading academics, early career researchers, football historians and students. That was followed in 2018 & 2019 by further enjoyable conferences. Due to Covid we had to cancel our 2020 & 2021 conferences but now we're back. This year the conference promises to be significant, with world leading research presented, while also providing networking opportunities, as well as the potential for collaborations.

Call for Papers | “Representation in dis/ability sports journalism and media” – Sports Media Identity Network Event #2 | Loughborough University London Campus, January 20, 2023. Call ends November...

The network encourages transdisciplinary approaches between researchers from fields such as, but not limited to: sports sociology, journalism studies, and communication studies. In addition to research presentations, events will include workshop activities designed to facilitate dialogue between members of the academy and sports media practitioners. This work will identify best practice and lead to a final report with recommendations for sports media practitioners, researchers and stakeholders.

Call for Participants | Evidence-Based Practices for Elite Sport | 22nd International Symposium, Jyväskylä, Finland, November 2–4, 2022. Registration closes November 1, 2022, 3pm

The symposium programme consists of dozens of presentations by top sports scientists from Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Participants will hear about the latest research in sports coaching and their practical applications. The main themes of this year's multidisciplinary symposium are athlete growth and development, strength training, nutrition, team sports, sports technology and skills training.

Call for Papers | 23rd Annual International Conference on Sports: Economic, Management, Marketing & Social Aspects | Athens, Greece, May 8–11, 2023. Call ends October 10, 2022

The aim of the conference is to bring together academics and researchers of all areas of sports. Participants can present on sports topics within broad streams of research areas. Also, special sessions will be organized for individual sports (soccer, football, baseball, basketball, handball, ice hockey, tennis, car racing, gymnastics etc). Consistent with the theme of ATINER’s small academic events, all programs may include a few sessions on current topics in education and research.
