I antologin Idrættens og civilsamfundets knaster: Kritiske samfundsvidenskabelige analyser (Syddansk Universitetsforlag) tar de olika författarna en närmare titt på några av de frågor inom idrott och civilsamhälle som ofta diskuteras. Varje avsnitt tar upp aktuella samhällsvetenskapliga frågor från en kritisk vinkel med syftet att skapa nya insikter som kan hjälpa till att övervinna "knastar" och skapa förändringar i civilsamhället och idrotten. Antologin, här recenserad av Mats Franzén, ges ut med anledning av 20-årsjubileet för Center for forskning i Idræt, Sundhed og Civilsamfund.

I Leif Yttergrens och Hans Bollings Kroppens apostlar. Kvinnliga gymnastikdirektörer 1864–2020 (Stockholmia Förlag) berättas historien om det år 1813 inrättade Gymnastiska centralinstitutet (GCI) i Stockholm där både män och kvinnor utbildades till gymnastikdirektörer, i en tid då kvinnor ännu var omyndiga. Jørn Hansen har tagit del av de bägge historikernas fascinerande berättelse och rekommenderar boken varmt till intresserade i såväl historia och idrottshistoria som kvinnostudier.

Peace and war, or camaraderie and struggle, are keywords for a lot of sports – and for Matti Goksøyr’s long and impressive work as a researcher. He earned his doctorate at the NIH in 1991 and became professor of sports history eight years later. In December 2022 he turned 70, and how better to celebrate that than with a Festschrift. Christian Tolstrup Jensen enjoyed reading Fred og krig: Festskrift til Matti Goksøyr [Peace and war: Festschrift to Matti Goksøyr], edited by Gudmund Skjeldal & Allan Bennich Grønkjær.

In The Olympics That Never Happened: Denver ’76 and the Politics of Growth (University of Texas Press), author Adam Berg details the powerful Colorado regime that gained the 1976 Olympic Games for Denver and the grassroots activism that brought down its Olympic dreams. Jørn Hansen has read a fascinating and exhaustive account of the dramatic events which led to the first rejection by a host city population to a bid for the Games.

The collected volume Krop og bevægelse i idræt og sundhed: Kulturanalytiske tilgange [Body and movement in sports and health: Cultural analytical approaches], edited by Susanne Ravn and Signe Højbjerre Larsen (Syddansk Universitetsforlag), offers an introduction to the various forms of cultural analytical traditions that characterize Danish as well as international research environments. Our reviewer is Frida Wågan, and she is, bar minor reservations, very appreciative in her informative review,

Det har blivit allt vanligare att se idrott som en lösning på problem som följer i spåren av segregation och ojämlikhet. I antologin Idrottens kraft? Ungas livsvillkor och ojämlikhetens problem i en segregerad stad av Magnus Dahlstedt och David Ekholm, studeras idrottens potential när det gäller att lösa sociala problem mot bakgrund av tre idrottsbaserade interventioner i en medelstor svensk stad. Jørn Hansen får en helgjuten bild av de problem som följer på en instrumentell användning av idrott som social problemlösare.

Fredagen den 1 mars 2019 disputerade Robert Svensson vid Örebro universitet på avhandlingen Från träningsoverall till trenchcoat: Tränarpositionens förändring inom svensk herrelitfotboll mellan 1960- och 2010-talet (Örebro universitet). Vi valde att vända oss till en dansk idrottshistoriker, Jørn Hansen vid Syddansk Universitet, för att få en recension med utifrånperspektiv av som det visade sig en både intressant och relevant avhandling.

A FIFA Research Scholarship allowed Steve Menary to conduct the study that he presents in his latest book, A Friendly Business? A critical evaluation of the globalisation and commercialisation of the preseason friendly (Editions CIES). Jørn Hansen has read an important and interesting contribution to an under-researched area that he strongly recommends.

Clemente A. Lisi’s latest book, A History of the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team (Rowman & Littlefield) did not quite live up to the expectations of our reviewer, Danish sport history professor Jørn Hansen. Too little context, societal or otherwise, and far too many match summaries turns this book into celebratory reading for supporters.
