Sport Social Work Journal is published by Ball State University, open access, and advocates for the advancement of social justice and change through research that occurs at the intersection of social work (and related professions) and sport. This special issue has a general ambition to present, compare and analyse the existence as well as the varieties and values of ‘outsiders’ and ‘underdogs’ in sports. Thus, in the history of sport we find athletes and teams as well as events and specific ‘sports’ that, in their actions or characters as ‘outsiders’ or ‘underdogs’, have for various reasons challenged the sports logics as well as the general normative structures, ideals and rationalities in sports regarding for instance performances, preconditions and lifestyles.

SSJ publishes original research, framed by social theory, on exercise, sport, physical culture, and the (physically active) body. The journal publishes peer-reviewed empirical, theoretical, and position papers; book reviews; and critical essays. EJSS’ function is to enable an international discussion about current issues and to foster collaboration between researchers from all social scientific sub-disciplines. It’s published 4 times per year. Kinesiology Review is a peer-reviewed publication whose mission ir is to advance the field of Kinesiology by publishing evaluative, insightful, and integrative scholarly reviews of kinesiology research, both basic and applied. The Forum Editor’s pick from the current issue: Work-Integrated Learning in the Development of a Kinesiology Degree by Kyle Guay, Carey L. Simpson.

Dr. Brown’s research centers the experiences of Black women and girls in sports, media, and education. She is a Black feminist sociologist whose work is intersectional and interdisciplinary. Her public scholarship can be found on First and Pen, and her academic work can be found in journals including Race & Social Problems, the South African Review of Sociology, and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

The aim of the award is to facilitate the integration of outstanding graduate students and early career researchers into the European community of sociology of sport scholars. The award will be granted to a scholarly paper authored by an early-career researcher, which is deemed by a panel of judges to be of highest quality. The winning author will receive a monetary prize and will be invited to present the paper at the Annual Conference of the Eass, to be hosted in Budapest on 30 May — 2 June 2023.
