The sport science research environment includes some 15 researchers as well as an almost equal number of research students. The research is primarily within the humanities and the social sciences, and in regard to research conducted at the department, sport is considered to be a multi-dimensional, societal and cultural phenomenon and includes physical activity, physical education (PE), exercise and sport performance. This also include research on elite sport.

This webinar will provide a global focus on sport and film, examining the critical role film has played in affirming the relationship between sport and national cultures internationally. Covering films of all types, from Hollywood blockbusters to regional documentaries and newsreels, Dr Crosson’s new book Sport, Film, and National Culture considers how filmic depictions of sport have configured and informed a wide range of distinctive national cultures, societies and identities.

Forskarutbildningen ger en bred och allsidig bas för fortsatt karriär som historiker och som forskare inom historiska och angränsande discipliner. Som doktorand kommer du att bedriva historisk forskning i ett projekt inriktat på idrott och/eller friluftsliv i ett brett samhällsperspektiv med fokus på miljö och hållbarhet. Den specifika forskningsuppgiften utformas i dialog med handledare och en forskargrupp inom Mistra Sport & Outdoors.

The aim of the course is to advance student interest in, and understanding of, the social and cultural aspects of sport, with particular reference to broader issues of culture, cultural production and cultural politics. The course will feature a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops on these themes. Lectures and seminars will be given by leading academics from European universities.

How is African athletes’ participation in various international competitions evolving with the rapidly transforming global sport ecosystems? What is the significance of African nation states participating and occasionally winning world competitions? What implications do these victories have for national sports development or management? What are the positive or negative impacts of the resources allocated to these participations?

This is the tenth anniversary of The Hockey Conference, which was founded by Dr. Colin Howell at Saint Mary’s. The 2020 Conference will occur in a meaningful place and at a meaningful time. Events occurring in Halifax around that time include the Women’s World Hockey Championships, the North American Indigenous Games, and the opening of the new ice rink on campus, the Dauphinee Centre.
