We are pleased to invite you to attend an online seminar to be held this spring: Sport, Diplomacy and Influence. This bilingual (French & English) webinar will be held once a month. All sessions will take place from 5PM to 7PM - Paris hour (except session 6 from noon to 2PM). As the seminar aims at fostering debates between historians of cultural and sport diplomacy, each session will be discussed by experts from both fields.

This multidisciplinary project (which combines history, information and communication sciences, international relations, and political science) aims to facilitate conversations between specialists in sport and those in diplomacy, and in particular soft power, at a time when the French government, the various ministries, and the organising committee of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games are organising an event of global importance in France.

The concept of ‘nation projection’ subsumes classic public and cultural diplomacy efforts and ‘soft power’ activities, such as the hosting of sport and entertainment events. The term also refers to state-sponsored campaigns of external influence activities including international broadcasting and covert meddling in the affairs of foreign states. This hybrid symposium will expand on debates and bring together comparative perspectives on how nation projection differs.

The upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar presents a fruitful opportunity to examine how illiberal regimes project the nation via the staging of sport, cultural, and entertainment media events. This workshop brings together scholars and non-academic stakeholders to explore and compare nation projection strategies of illiberal and democratic states across different contexts, channels, and platforms in the digital age.

FranceAndUS aims to build 250 stories of French and American sports voices by the 250th anniversary of the Franco-American diplomatic alliance in 2028 – and the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games. The growing archive of Voices can be used in numerous ways as tools for classes, ideas or access points for research, and more.

In order to encourage the contribution of new generations of scholars to the scientific debate, The International Spectator currently welcomes the submission of proposals for THEMATIC SPECIAL CORES of 4-6 articles on the topic of “Sport and International Relations” by teams of young scholars (under 35 years of age), to be considered for publication in the journal. Proposals shall focus on any aspect of the multifaceted relationship between Sport and International Relations.
