The Sociology of Sport Journal (SSJ) publishes original research, framed by social theory, on exercise, sport, physical culture, and the (physically active) body. The purpose of SSJ is to stimulate and communicate research, critical thought, and theory development on issues pertaining to the sociology of sport. The journal publishes peer-reviewed empirical, theoretical, and position papers; book reviews; and critical essays.

SSSF, a multidisciplinary social sciences sport study journal, welcomes articles that deal with sport and social change and social stability in a wide sense, articles about the profound and comprehensive processes affecting sports such as professionalization, globalization, commercialization, urbanization, technologization, medicalization and juridification.

The considerable growth of interest in commerce, media and politics and their relationship to sport in international academia has resulted in academics in various disciplines writing about sport. Sport in Society is a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary forum for academics to discuss the growing relationship of sport to significant areas of modern life.

Managing Sport and Leisure is a refereed journal that publishes high quality research articles to inform and stimulate discussions relevant to sport and leisure management globally. The journal is committed to publishing research that advances understanding of the practice of sport and leisure management, and to provide a high level forum for communication between academics and practitioners of sport and leisure.

I David Ekholms artikel diskuteras hur ‘idrott som en lösning på sociala problem’ som praktik och kunskap har kunnat göra sig gällande i vår nutida historia utifrån hur fenomenet framträder idag, med fokus på tre samtida idrottsbaserade sociala interventioner som bedrivs i ett socialt och ekonomiskt utsatt område i en större svensk stad.

Sport is seen by many as a panacea to cure all social ills. It’s not all that simple, as David Ekholm shows in his PhD thesis Sport as a Means of Responding to Social Problems: Rationales of Government, Welfare and Social Change (Linköping University). I sin senast monografi Midnight Basketball: Race, Sports, and Neoliberal Social Policy (University of Chicago Press) studerar Douglas Hartmann en social intervention i 1980- och 90-talens USA där unga svarta män erbjöds att spela basket runt midnatt. David Ekholm har läst med stort intresse, och skrivit en fullödig recension av boken.
