An insightful and valuable book that convincingly argues for taking fandom seriously

The Psychology of Sports Fans by Aaron C.T. Smith (Routledge) explains the intricate psychological foundations of sports fandom, exploring why sports hold such emotional power across cultures and demographics, and uncovers how sports provide meaning, identity, and community, making them an essential part of human life. Peter Hassmén is our excellent guide to this book, presenting its strengths and weaknesses equally detailed and respectfully, concluding that the sometime lack of scholarly depth affecting for instance the discussion on religion and hooliganism is well compensated for by its accessibility in structure and writing style.

New academic research closing in on the ref

Our reviewer is Stuart Carrington, whose 2019 book Blowing the Whistle: The Psychology of Football Refereeing places him well for the job. And he is quite satisfied with this crucial contribution to the literature around sports officials that more than meets its aim.

A clear and structured introduction to the area of sports marketing

Viktor Magnusson reviewed the first edition of Introduction to Sport Marketing for idrottsforum.org back in 2010. Now in its third edition, with a new publisher (Routledge) and the addition of four more authors, it was again sent to Viktor for a review. The collective efforts of Aaron C.T. Smith, Constantino Stavros, James Skinner, Andrea N. Geurin and Lauren M. Burch have resulted in a considerably better book; it has been brought up to date, every chapter has an improved introduction, and it includes case descriptions instead of links to cases on the ’net.
