It is our pleasure to solicit chapter proposals for an edited handbook to be published by Routledge titled Technology, Sport and Recreation: Physical Activity in the Digital Age – this volume will be edited by Drs. Jake Bustad and Gashaw Abeza.
Given the rapid pace of technological advancement, scholars and practitioners in recreation and sport are continually seeking knowledge on the latest trends and their implications, and there is a need for additional material that covers the impact of new technologies on the fitness, recreation and sport industry. The book will provide both scholars and practitioners with valuable insights, making it an essential resource for staying informed and competitive in a rapidly evolving landscape, whether through academic research or practical application in the field.

Topics may include – but are not limited to – the following areas:

    • Wearable Technology and Personal Fitness
    • Gamification of Fitness and Training
    • Inclusive Gaming and Adaptive Technologies
    • Artificial Intelligence in Sports and Recreation
    • Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality in Sport
    • Digital Sports Communities, Social Engagement, and Social Media
    • Sports Analytics and Data-driven Performance
    • Sports Tech Startups and Innovation
    • Challenges of Recreation and Sport in the Digital Age
    • Digital Transformation of Traditional Sports: Trends and Innovations
    • eSports and Digital Technology

Final chapters should follow the structure outlined in this document.

If you are interested in contributing as an author to any of the topics listed above (see attached brief chapter descriptions), please let us know. Responses will be reviewed as they are received, and chapter assignments will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. Kindly send us the following information: (a) your preferred chapter topic, (b) the names and affiliations of all authors, (c) contact information for the lead author, and (d) a 200-word abstract outlining your proposed chapter.  We are interested in receiving submissions from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds and international affiliations.

    • Final Chapter Submissions: June 30, 2025
