We are excited to announce a call for papers for a section on sports at the Annual Conference of the Hungarian Sociological Association entitled “Sport as a Space of Boundary-Making: Identity, Power, and Resistance in Society”. The role of sport in society has always been tied to boundaries and identities – actively creating, reinforcing, or dismantling them. Observing societies through sports gives a unique perspective for analysis and deeper understanding. This is why we are organising a section at the Annual Conference of the Hungarian Sociological Association to invite scholars and early career researchers to discuss sports’ role in society.

We are looking for contributions that address – among others – the following topics:

    •  Sport as an instrument of discipline, power, and social control
    •  Sport and social boundaries (class, gender, ethnicity, ability)
    •  Making and unmaking boundaries in sport (physical, social, symbolic)
    •  Sport, nationalism, and political agendas
    •  Informal and grassroots sport as sites of change
    •  Media, discourse and representation in sport
    •  Sport’s role in shaping collective identity and memory

Both empirical and theoretical approaches are welcome.

The conference will take place between October 28-30, 2026. For more information, you can find the full call for papers here (section 28): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iAYUYt44pyG7bo4U5QOzEcD9IzXdMMRG/view

    Application deadline: 3 June 2026.

Please submit your abstracts through this link: https://szociologia.hu/en/meetings/section-registration

Please note: Even though the section will be in English, the application form requires the submission of a Hungarian abstract as well. For that, you may use a translation tool – we will review the English abstracts in any case.

We look forward to your contributions.

    Kind regards,
Zsofia Leleszi, Lenke Palfi, Aron Szalay
