The Applied Sport Management Association invites scholars, practitioners, and students to submit their work to be considered for the 2021 ASMA Conference. This virtual conference is a replacement for the originally scheduled Indianapolis conference. This conference will not be live. Instead, the conference will be hosted by Whova. The Whova website will contain the presentations of all paid registrants whose work has been accepted. Paid registrants will have access to all conference content, which they will be able to search and browse at their leisure during the time of the conference. Submissions from the following categories will be accepted:
-
-
- Research Presentations
- Industry Interviews
- Graduate Student Research Competition
-
Submissions may include empirical research, qualitative research, case studies, conceptual/theoretical work, and industry interviews. Submissions to the ASMA conference should not be concurrently submitted to another conference or have been previously presented at a conference. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, November 15, 2020.
The virtual ASMA conference will be Feb. 24-26, 2021, hosted by Schreiner University. The entire conference will take place virtually/online via Whova. Cost for the conference will be $20 for students and $30 for faculty and professionals. For additional information about the conference and ASMA, please visit: http://appliedsportmanagement.org/
General Submission Guidelines
-
-
- Authors’ names should not appear on more than two submissions, regardless of co-authorship or type of presentation. An exception is made for authors who are serving as an advisor to a student who is submitting research; when listing authorship, the advisor should be clearly identified with the word “advisor” in parenthesis after his/her name.
- All submissions should be sent as email attachments (Microsoft Word format) to the respective chairs of the various submission categories.
- The subject line for submissions should read: “Applied Sport Management Conference Submission”
If a presentation is accepted, all authors listed on the submission are required to register for the conference. Registration expectations and guidelines will be included in the letters of acceptance. - Those accepted will submit their video via a video link URL such as can be obtained from YouTube or VMEO. Whova accepts some other video platforms as well. Upon completion of the video, accepted researchers will only submit the URL and not the video files.

Research Presentation Guidelines (Asynchronous Virtual Presentation)
- Abstracts should be submitted to Dr. Michael Diacin, Conference Academic Chair, via diacinm@uindy.edu
- Abstracts should be written using the following guide:
- 12-point, Times New Roman font, single-spaced text
- Page 1: Title Page
- The title of the abstract should be centered near the top of the page.
- Below the title, list all author names and affiliations in order of contribution.
- Centered at the bottom of page one, provide the principal author’s contact information: mailing address, e-mail address, and telephone number.
- Page 2: Abstract Page
- Do not place author names or affiliations on this page.
- The title of the abstract should be centered at the top of the page.
- Abstract follow below the title and should aligned to left of the page. Abstracts are limited to 500 words (excluding references). The abstract should include text only (no tables/figures). Authors should try to be parsimonious with the use of citations in the abstract; however, any citations should be accompanied by a corresponding reference at the end of the abstract.
- Given the applied focus of the conference, authors should make sure to specifically discuss the implications of the research for practitioners in sport.
- If accepted, you will record a 15-min virtual presentation. Presentations will be divided into specific categories. All presentations will be made available from the start of the conference. Once the conference concludes, presentations will no longer be available to paid conference registrants. Along with the virtual presentation, presenters will upload PowerPoint slides of their presentations for conference attendees to review.
Industry Interviews
- Submissions in this category should be sent to Dr. Matt Robinson, Industry Interview Chair, via mrobinson@schreiner.edu
- Industry interview sessions are an exciting new submission option for the 2021 ASMA conference. This submission option consists of a faculty member or student conducting an interview with a sport industry practitioner. Practitioners from a wide array of backgrounds (e.g., community sport, interscholastic sport, intercollegiate athletics, professional sports) are welcome for consideration. The focus of the interviews should be on topical areas that are important, relevant, and applicable to current and aspiring sport professionals. Here are several examples: (1) a student might conduct an interview with a ticket sales manager to discuss how COVID-19 has impacted their profession; (2) a student might interview a college athletic director to discuss the process of recruiting and negotiating contracts for college coaches; (3) a faculty member might conduct an interview with a development officer (fundraiser) to discuss how an athletic department initiates and successfully executes a new stadium capital campaign. Interview sessions should be approximately 15 minutes. A video of the interview will be pre-recorded and uploaded to the conference website.
- Industry Interview submissions should be written using the following guide:
- 12-point, Times New Roman font, single-spaced text
- Page 1: Title Page
- The title of the interview (e.g., “An Interview with AD Smith from State University about Fundraising”) should be centered near the top of the page.
- Below the title, list the name of the interviewer and institutional affiliation.
- Centered at the bottom of page one, provide the interviewer’s contact information: mailing address, e-mail address, and telephone number.
- Page 2: Interview Information Page
- Do not place author names or affiliations on this page.
- The title of interview should be centered at the top of the page.
- Identify the subject of the interview. Provide a short (1 paragraph) bio of the interviewee.
- Provide a brief (1-2 paragraph) description of the interview and the intended contribution of the conversation.
- List the anticipated interview questions.
- Please note that the interview should not be conducted prior to submission of the proposal. If the interview proposal is accepted, the interview will be conducted prior to the conference, then uploaded to the conference website.
Graduate Student Research Competition
In order to be considered for the graduate student research competition, students must first prepare an abstract for an oral presentation following the guidelines provided above (all authors listed on the abstract must be graduate students at the time of the conference). In addition to the abstract submission, students who wish to participate in the research competition should complete the authorship declaration form on the ASMA Website. The abstract and authorship declaration form should be submitted to Dr. Wonyoung Kim at Wonyoung.Kim@wichita.edu. Three submissions will be selected as finalists. Student research finalists will record and upload a 15-min presentation. A panel of judges will review the research presentations. A winner will be determined following a review of all three finalist submissions. The winner will receive an award memento as well as a prize of $100. Additionally, submissions not selected as finalists may still be offered the option of giving a virtual presentation at the conference. For questions about the student research competition, please contact Dr. Wonyoung Kim.
