I am pleased to announce a Call for Abstracts for our upcoming session at the XXI ISA World Congress of Sociology in Gwangju, Korea (4–10 July 2027). Hosted by RC58 (Society and Emotions), our session is titled “Sport, Emotions, and Social Life: Exploring Affective Dimensions of Contemporary Sporting Cultures.”
Sport remains one of the most emotionally charged domains of contemporary social life. The central aim of this panel is to foster a rigorous sociological debate on how affects and emotions shape sporting experiences, community building, and broader social dynamics.
We are seeking theoretical, empirical, and methodological research proposals that offer critical, empirically grounded analyses of these processes. We particularly encourage contributions that address:
- The manifestation of emotions across professional and amateur settings.
- Intersections of emotion with power, identity, and structural inequalities (class, gender, race).
- The emotional consequences of the commercialisation and digitalisation of sport.
- Collective experiences of celebration, shame, disappointment, and resilience.
Language: Abstracts and presentations will be accepted in both English and Spanish.
Key Dates
- Call for Abstracts: 3 August – 14 October 2026
- Abstract Notifications: 4 December 2026
