Dr. Matt Moore (Editor) and Dr. Stacy Kratz (Associate Editor) announce the release of the first volume of the Sport Social Work Journal (SSWJ). The mission of SSWJ is to bring attention to the needs of individuals and collectives within the sport and athletic community and to demonstrate how the profession of social work is suited to meet those needs. The journal is also committed to providing information on how the sport and athletic community can advocate for social justice and change through sport. Our vision is to promote individual and community well-being through sports by providing scholarly information on the intersection of sports and social work practice, theory and research.
This open access inaugural volume features peer-reviewed research articles, commentaries, practice notes, teaching notes, and a book review. These articles advocate for the advancement of social justice, create awareness of the vulnerabilities athletes face, and educate key players in the athletic communities on issues surrounding well-being and development of athletes.
We set forth to provide an outlet for scholarly discussion by publishing a volume that displays diversity and multiple-perspectives on research. We are confident this volume will be the first of many to create a space for sport social work scholars and others with a similar passion.
We would like to invite you to read the work of distinguished scholars, explore an emerging sub-specialty field, and give consideration to how your own scholarship might contribute to our efforts. A special thank you to our editorial board, peer reviewers, graduate students at the University of Alabama, and all others who played a role in our launch. What started as a dream became realized. You can access the journal at https://www.sswj.org/publications.
