PALAESTRA is announcing a call for papers for a forthcoming special issue called, “Moving Beyond Inclusion: Critical and Innovative Perspectives on Disability and Physical Activity.” This issue will be guest edited by Dr. Katherine Holland of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
“Inclusion” is a term and concept that has proliferated in physical education spaces since the early 1990s. Related scholarship has explored inclusion from multiple perspectives, including teachers, administrators, and more recently from disabled students themselves. The purpose of this special issue is to elevate and highlight emerging critical thought, beyond inclusion, regarding a broad range emergent topics which exist at the intersection of disability and physical activity (e.g., physical education, sport, recreation). We are particularly interested in papers that explore (but not limited to):
- Co-production of research/knowledge
- Intersectionality of multiple marginalized identities
- Ableism/disablism
- Disability justice & critical pedagogy
- Critical reflexivity
- Subjective experiences of disability
Abstract Submission
Interested authors are invited to submit an abstract for consideration to the Guest Editor, Dr. Katherine Holland (katherine.e.holland@ntnu.no). Abstracts should include the proposed title, authors’ names and affiliations, the corresponding author’s contact information, and a brief description of the proposed manuscript’s focus. Abstracts should be 400-500 words, and the accompanying email should include the subject line “PALAESTRA Special Issue Abstract [Title]_[Author Last Name(s)]”. Abstract submission deadline: November 15, 2026
Should an abstract be approved, the full manuscript deadline is January 4, 2027. Full paper submissions may fall under one of four paper types:
- Research
- Reviews
- Practical Application,
- Viewpoint
