Dear all,
So, the festive season is over, unless of course you include this newsletter in your understanding of festivities. And if you do, you must have missed getting one these past three weeks. Be that as it may, we’re back now, and at this end that marks a return to normality of sorts.
We did get some rest during the holidays, but still managed to get a few things published (see below; language and publication dates, YYMMDD, in brackets). Two book reviews that are included below were reported in the Boxing Day special Newsletter, and are repeated here to make sure they weren’t overlooked. Click on the red headings to go to content. Utilize the Google Translate service to turn Scandinavian language pages into (some sort of) English.
Have a great week,
Kjell Eriksson

Book Reviews
Sport, Social Media, and Digital Technology: Sociological Approaches by Jimmy Sanderson (ed.)
Jimmy Sanderson’s Sport, Social Media, and Digital Technology: Sociological Approaches (Emerald Publications) brings together a collection of essays from leading global scholars to illustrate how sociological approaches are imperative to enhancing our understanding of sport and social media and digital technology. A collective of sport sociologists at Nord University, Norway has read the book as a book group, bringing many various experiences and perspectives into a rich review highlighting the book’s strong points as well as its weaknesses. (Review in English by Stian Røsten, Anne Tjønndal, Sigbjørn Børreson Skirbekk, Frida Austmo Wågan & Egil Trasti Rogstad, published 221220.)
Sport, Film and National Culture by Seán Crosson (ed.)
Sport and film have historically been key components of national cultures and societies. Seán Crosson’s Sport, Film and National Culture (Routledge) is the first collection dedicated to examining the intersection of these popular cultural forces within specific national contexts. Garry Whannel, one of the world’s leading experts on the cultural analysis of media sport is our reviewer, and he is unequivocally enthusiastic; a few minor comments don’t affect the general coherence, focus and readability of the book.(Review in English published 221221.)
Gym Bodies: Exploring Fitness Cultures by James Brighton, Ian Wellard & Amy Clark
Drawing on autoethnographic research, Gym Bodies: Exploring Fitness Cultures by James Brighton, Ian Wellard & Amy Clark (Routledge) explores the embodied experiences of ‘gym goers’ and the fitness cultures that are constructed within gyms and fitness spaces. Greta Bladh is well placed for reviewing this book, and her critical reading gives credit to the authors’ efforts as well as raises questions about the benefits of the autoethnographic method. A highly readable book just the same. (Review in English published 230116.)
Britain’s Olympic Women: A History by Jean Williams
Exploring the key themes of gender and nationalism, and presenting a wealth of new empirical, archival evidence, Jean Williams’ Britain’s Olympic Women: A History (Routledge) explores the sporting culture produced by British women who aspired to become Olympians. Our reviewer is Norwegian sport studies scholar, and former track and field sprinter, Gerd von der Lippe, who warmly recommends the book to anyone interested in sport history, Olympic history, women’s history, British history or gender studies. (Review in English published 230118.)
Athlete Activism: Contemporary Perspectives by Rory Magrath (ed.)
Athlete Activism: Contemporary Perspectives, edited by Rory Magrath (Routledge) examines the phenomenon of athlete activism across all levels of sport, from elite and international sport, to collegiate and semi-pro, and asks what this tells us about the relationship between sport and wider society. Our reviewer Steph Doehler finds that the collection, albeit less international than proclaimed, still expands knowledge in the field – besides being both insightful and thoroughly entertaining.(Review in Swedish published 230119.)
