That Was The Week That Was,
September 23–29, 2024

Dear all,

I spent last Saturday at the annual Swedish Book Fair in the city of Gothenburg, together with many thousands of other book lovers. It’s a great inspiration just being there, walking about, looking in at the many publisher’s stalls, picking up interesting-looking books, catching interviews with authors, and so on. Regrettably, back in Malmö yesterday afternoon, it became obvious that I had picked up something other than books at the Fair, as I experienced all the classic symptoms of a bad cold or possibly a mild flu – time will tell which.
I am able to produce this newsletter, but we’ll have to see how the rest of the week turns out in terms of publishing.
Last week the following items were published on idrottsforum.org (see below; language and publication dates, YYMMDD, in brackets). Click on the red headings to go to content. Utilize the Google Translate service to turn Scandinavian language pages into (some sort of) English.
Have a great week,

Book Reviews

International Sport Business: Current Issues, Future Directions, by Hans Westerbeek & Adam Karg

(Created with Microsoft Designer AI 9/24 2024)

International Sport Business: Current Issues, Future Directions by Hans Westerbeek and Adam Karg offers a contemporary and forward-looking survey of the global sport industry, introducing the key themes, trends and critical issues. Our reviewer is Giuseppe Telesca, and he finds much to learn from, and like about Westerbeek & Karg’s efforts. He does, however, point out the absence of a chapter on the important geopolitical aspects of the globalization of sport and sport business. (Review in English, published 240924.)

Helt i mål: Lær statistisk tenkning med tall fra sportens verden [Right on target. Learn statistical thinking with numbers from the world of sport], by Christer Thrane

Christer Thrane’s book Lær statistisk tenkning med tall fra sportens verden (Humanist Forlag) makes even those with advanced statistics anxiety competent to judge the credibility of statistical news material. And it requires no prior knowledge. Sports sociologist Mads Skauge has read Thrane’s book with pleasure – although not uncritically – and like Thrane, he does not shy away from peppering his text with sporting metaphors. Fun reading. (Review in Norwegian, published 240925.)

Pressure: Lessons from the psychology of the penalty shootout, by Geir Jordet

In Pressure: Lessons from the psychology of the penalty shootout (New River Books), psychologist Professor Geir Jordet presents his studies of the psychological elements of the penalty shootout, and the universal human stress mechanisms that it triggers. Professors Kjetil Kåre Haugen and Alex Krumer read Jordet’s book, and in their review for idrottsforum.org they find the book to be well-written but regrettably also marred by fundamental flaws in its statistical analyses. (Review in English, published 240926.)
