The politics–administration dichotomy in support for national sport guidelines in local government: The views of Finnish municipal top decision-makers on child and youth physical activity guidelines

While autonomous municipalities in western societies have become responsible for the implementation of national sport policy, the diversity of local decision-makers’ policy interests presents significant challenges. Building on an institutional approach based on Max Weber’s theory of bureaucracy, the problem is addressed in this study and peer reviewed article by Anna Lee and colleagues, by investigating local political and administrative top decision-makers’ support of the Sports Act guidelines for child and youth sport in Finland. Sport, Gender and Mega-Events, by Katherine Dashper (ed.)

Featuring a range of mega-event case studies and conceptual discussions, Katherine Dashper’s edited collection Sport, Gender and Mega-Events (Emerald) and considers how these highly mediatised global phenomena both reflect and help shape broader ideas about gender, sex and identity in and beyond sport. Sepandarmaz Mashreghi is our reviewer, and having some doubts as to the transforming powers of mega-events in terms of gender inequalities within sports, she still finds the collection to be a valuable contribution to the issue of sport mega-event and gender. Odd encounters on the roads of Riga, by Erkki Vettenniemi

Something surprising happened the other day, something truly extraordinary that I never expected to experience in my advanced age. Come to think of it, the shocking sensation might well have been the first of its kind in my entire life. You see, for a second or two I was genuinely touched by sport. More precisely, I was profoundly moved by a handful of runners speeding past me. The venue of the almost mystical moment was Riga, the cozy capital of Latvia, where I attended the inaugural World Athletics Road Running Championship for reasons unrelated to mere racing.
