That Was The Week That Was,
October 7–13, 2024

Dear all,

In last week’s Newsletter I informed the Forum readership that I have accepted to publish a book, an anthology celebrating 50 years of Swedish sport studies within social sciences and the humanities, and that this new role will affect idrottsforum.org during the coming two or three weeks. The modest output of last week bears witness to this prediction. Read more about it in last week’s Newsletter, in case you missed it.
Last week the following items were published on idrottsforum.org (see below; language and publication dates, YYMMDD, in brackets). Click on the red headings to go to content. Utilize the Google Translate service to turn Scandinavian language pages into (some sort of) English.
Have a great week,
Kjell Eriksson

Book Reviews

Sport Migrants, Precarity and Identity: Brazilian Footballers in Central and Eastern Europe, by José Hildo de Oliveira Filho

José Hildo de Oliveira Filho’s latest book, Sport Migrants, Precarity and Identity: Brazilian Footballers in Central and Eastern Europe (Routledge) takes a close look at the experiences of migrant athletes, their precarious careers, and at what this can tell us about wider themes of globalization, identity, race, gender, and the body. In his review for idrottsforum.org, Jan Andre Lee Ludvigsen shows that it is a well-written book of high interest for sociologists of sport, of migration, and of work and the workplace, (Review in English, published 241009.)

Annette R. Hofmann & Pascal Mamudou Camara’s edited collection Critical Perspectives on Esports (Routledge) offers new, multidisciplinary approaches to esports, one of the most rapidly growing sectors in the sports and leisure industries. Sociologist and esports expert Egil Trasti Rogstad has read the anthology carefully, and his review offers a thorough description and an insightful and critical analysis of the various perspectives that make up the book’s way of looking at esports. (Review in English, published 241010.)
