Book Reviews

Encyclopedia of Sport Management; Second Edition, by Paul M. Pedersen (ed.)

In its second edition, Paul M. Pedersen’s monumental edited collection Encyclopedia of Sport Management (Edward Elgar) comprises 613 entries, alphabetically presented, from “Ableism” to “Zera tolerance”. For practical reasons, Derrick Charway has read the first edition for this review. The differences between the editions are mostly quantitative, and his review and his assessments are still valid. He finds that the book offers a solid foundation for further exploration and serves as a significant starting point for those looking to deepen their knowledge of sport management. (Review in English, published 241112.)

A Critical Realist Theory of Sport, by Graham Scambler

How fares the sociology of sport? How can it continue to make sense to and of its object of study and knowledge? In his book A Critical Realist Theory of Sport (Routledge), Graham Scambler grapples with those questions and presents a framework for reshaping, and/or supporting, the sociology of sport and its relevance in and for contemporary academia, as well as society. Kalle Jonasson navigates carefully in the unfamiliar and intellectually challenging waters of critical realism in his attempt to penetrate that theoretical tradition. (Review in English, published 241114.)

Mental Health in Sport and Physical Activity: Selected Writings from the ISSP Academy of Science, by Robert J. Schinke (ed.)

Bringing together the most prestigious writings on mental health in sport and physical activity from the International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, Mental Health in Sport and Physical Activity by editor Robert Schinke (Routledge) provides an essential reference for the field of sport and exercise psychology. In her review, Marit Sørensen points to the collection’s broad span, which makes it especially valuable as an introduction to the field of mental health in sport and physical activity. (Review in English, published 241115.)
